Some people exercise religiously and barely improve. Scientists may have found why. IGFBP7, a protein secreted by senescent cells, acts as a molecular brake on exercise adaptation. Older adults completing 1 year of HIIT: those with higher baseline IGFBP7 gained significantly less fitness. In mice, deleting IGFBP7 amplified training gains. Overexpressing it abolished them entirely. UK Biobank data (n=45,438): lower IGFBP7 correlated with reduced mortality across multiple age-related diseases. The ceiling on your fitness gains might not be your willpower or your training plan. It could be a senescence protein that constrains how much your body can adapt. The next question: can we lower it?
