1974 - Experimental Plexiglass sound wall installed along Pomona Fwy (CA-60) near Garfield Avenue in Monterey Park (CT photo). Problems with sound reduction effectiveness and glare led to this idea being rejected. Today most sound walls are masonry block with aesthetic touches.

This restrained line of motorists were among the first to drive on the Arroyo Seco Parkway on opening day, December 30, 1940 which explains why they’re so orderly and respectful. I’d say it’s reasonable to assume that this 6.7-mile roadway didn’t stay immaculate for very long.
