A cosmic first! 🚨 Hubble has spotted a comet that slowed and reversed its spin. Outgassing jets acted like thrusters, literally pushing it into a new rotation, shown here in this science visualization: news.stsci.edu/4c2u6hv

Spacewalks: the original remote work. 🧑‍🚀📡 On March 18, Jessica Meir and Chris Williams prepped the station’s 2A power channel, key work for future roll‑out solar arrays and long‑term station operations. Remaining tasks will shift to a future spacewalk.

Webb captured this new image of galaxy Messier 58, in both the near and mid-infrared, as part of a treasury of 55 massive, star-forming galaxies. The data on the properties of these galaxies will add insight to our picture of how galaxies grow and evolve over cosmic time.

Is it just me or is that galaxy getting closer? 👀 M90 (NGC 4569), shown here in this new Webb image, is indeed getting closer! Its orbit through the Virgo cluster has accelerated so much that M90 is in the process of escaping the cluster entirely and is moving in our direction.

Spudnik-1, an orbiting potato on @Space_Station! I flew potatoes on Expedition 72 for my space garden, an activity I did in my off-duty time. This is an early purple potato, complete with spot of hook Velcro to anchor it in my improvised grow light terrarium. Potatoes are one of the most efficient plants based on edible nutrition to total plant mass (including roots). Recognized by Andy Weir in his book/movie "The Martian," potatoes will have a place in future exploration of space. So I thought it good to get started now!

I’m even more struck by the extraordinary diversity of colors and textures on our home planet after seeing it once again through only my helmet visor during last week’s spacewalk. Today’s #EarthArt highlight, the shades and shapes of South America as seen from the @Space_Station Cupola window – these coastlines, waves, terrain, and swirling currents caught my eye.

Day 038, orbit 0593 – Today is World Meteorological Day, a moment to highlight the crucial role that the Earth’s atmosphere plays in our lives. Without the thin layer of air surrounding our planet – most of it contained within just a few dozen kilometres – life might never have emerged on Earth. Our atmosphere, so delicate and so fragile when viewed from space, plays a central role in regulating temperature 🌡️, shielding us from solar radiation ☀, and driving the water cycle 💧, winds 💨 and precipitation 🌧 …  and therefore in supporting our societies. 🌍 As astronauts, we have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the fascinating dynamics of the atmosphere in motion. But of course, it is the satellites in orbit and the weather stations on the ground that monitor our planet 24/7. The theme of the 2026 edition, “Observe today, protect tomorrow”, is a reminder that the European Space Agency (ESA) implements the space segment component of Copernicus, the European Union's Earth observation programme.  👋 It is also an opportunity to salute all the scientists who analyse space-based and in situ data to help safeguard our future on this planet – the only one we have. 📷 NASA/ESA – S. Last week I had the privilege of conducting my fourth spacewalk, venturing out to deploy a bracket to hold a new solar array to augment the power system of the @Space_Station. This spacewalk felt even more special than my previous ones because I shared the experience with a first-time spacewalker, @NASA astronaut @Astro_ChrisW!  It is a tremendously powerful feeling to pass the torch to the next generation of explorers that will keep this space station running. 📷 — NASA Astronaut Chris Williams on his first spacewalk. 📷 — Requisite spacewalk selfie (note the Earth in the top of my visor!) 📷 — Chris (left) and Jessica (right) building the solar panel bracket. 📷 — @astro_hathaway and @Soph_astro getting us suited up in the airlock.
