Everyone loves a holiday long weekend! Whether you’re spending it with family and friends, traveling or exploring nature, it’s a great opportunity to slow down, relax and celebrate. Whatever you choose to do this long weekend, the most important thing is that you do it safely. Never operate a vehicle of any kind under the influence of drugs or alcohol. That includes snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles! Be safe on the roads. Slow down, buckle up, stay focused and drive according to road and weather conditions. If you’re headed out on an adventure, have a plan and be prepared. Make sure you have emergency supplies and tell someone where you’re headed and when you’ll be back. Officers will be on patrol on our roads and trails and in our communities to make sure that everyone is safe and sober. Have a fun and relaxing long weekend! #SafetySaturday

We’re in the thick of winter — but the ice might not be as thick as you think. Even when it looks solid, ice thickness and strength aren’t always visible. Before you head out on skis, skates, or an all-terrain vehicle, check the ice where you plan to travel. Provincial and federal safety guidelines recommend at least 15 cm for walking, 20 cm for skating or skiing, and 25–30 cm for snowmobiles. And that’s only when the ice is clear and consistent! Slush, snow cover, weather changes, currents, and tides can all weaken the ice. Don’t take chances. Test the ice, stay alert to changing conditions, and remember that “just a quick ride” can turn dangerous fast. #SafetySaturday

Keep your snow to yourself! Throwing or leaving your snow on a roadway is a violation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Highway Traffic Act — and a serious safety concern. If you’re caught dumping snow on a roadway, you can be ticketed and fined. Plus, when snow is pushed into our roads, it obstructs traffic, which increases the risk of motor vehicle collisions and can potentially cause delays for emergency response vehicles. So, when clearing snow this winter, remember to keep our roads clear and safe for our neighbours and communities.

⚠️ Snow and ice on your vehicle is hazardous to you and others. Clear all snow and ice from roof, windows, mirrors, lights and license plate. ❄️ Icy roads and blowing snow can put everyone at risk. Slow down, increase following distance, and drive with extreme caution.

⚠️ TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Heavy snow and high winds mean road conditions are very poor across Eastern Newfoundland. For your safety and the safety of others, please consider delaying any non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, use extreme caution and drive according to road and weather conditions. Remember — snow means slow!

Today, we remember the 84 lives lost on the Ocean Ranger. Forty-four years later, their absence is still deeply felt, and the lessons learned from this tragedy continue to guide us. We honour their memory and stand with all who carry this loss.

Before you say 'Be Mine', make sure your online love is the real thing. If someone you’ve never met in person showers you with affection, avoids video chat requests or pressures you to send money, it’s a red flag, not a love story! 🚩 Keep your personal details private, trusts your instincts, talk to a loved one about your concerns and never, ever send money or financial information to someone you don’t know. 💘 Protect your heart – and your financial security! #SafetySaturday

💔Every year around Valentine’s Day, fraudsters target unsuspecting victims who are looking for love and/or companionship. Relationship fraud happens when no one is looking. It occurs on dating websites, social media and through wrong number text messages known as conversational attacks. The fraudster’s primary goal is to escalate initial communications into a trusting relationship. This can include professions of love, offers of support, financial advice or other emotional lures. Understanding how these frauds operate and knowing the common red flags is key to protecting yourself and others. Heading out for a winter weather adventure? Planning and preparation during cold weather can be the difference between safe and scary on the trails. Stay safe with a few simple tips: •Cover exposed skin — ears, fingers, and cheeks are first to freeze •Layer clothing so you stay warm and dry •Share your route and expected return time before you head out •Bring a charged phone and/or satellite/GPS device, an emergency kit, and extra fuel •Turn back early if the weather shifts — visibility and wind chill can change fast Stay warm, stay visible and get home safely. #SafetySaturday
