This is a tragedy and part of why I helped set up @GenChange. The good news is: young people today care more about social issues than any generation before them, are more likely to volunteer, and want social purpose careers. There is a future here.

Agree with some of this but to do it properly you do have to invest - volunteering is never free and young people need support throughout. The infrastructure is there with @NCS and there's an opportunity with a new PM and CSR to expand its remit. #nationalservice

The UK desperately needs an extended form of Citizen Service. How many young people would sign up to install solar panels, insulate homes, care for the elderly or mentor in schools - if given the chance?
