Funny how nobody worries about your knees until you start running.
You can smoke, drink, eat like a raccoon at midnight, sit all day, sleep badly, stress yourself into the floor…
and most people call that normal life.
But the moment you start running?
“Isn’t that bad for your knees?”
Suddenly everyone becomes an orthopedic consultant.
Maybe running is not the weird thing.
Maybe the weird thing is how normal people think feeling awful all the time is fine.
What’s the dumbest “running is bad for you” comment you’ve heard?

I just spoke with someone who told me he'd rather spend some time in jail than stop eating meat for a while.
Think about that for a moment.
Physical confinement felt more acceptable than voluntarily changing what appears on his plate.
As a vegan of more than 25 years, I've heard reactions like this many times.
It makes me wonder if reactions like this are really about food at all.
So what is being defended?
Taste?
Tradition?
Identity?
Freedom?
Sometimes the strongest resistance appears exactly where a deeply held assumption is being touched.

No, we get it. We also get that AC isnt common for yall to have, what we don't get is *why*. Global warming has been a known factor for decades atp, and yall have heat waves every year, multiple times a year.

i think americans forget how far north the uk actually is, london is at the same latitude at CALGARY, glasgow is the same as copenhagen. it is NOT normal for them to be having this kind of heat - at any point during the year

“we don’t need AC it only gets hot a couple days a year” this is the second heat wave this year and it’s only june. it’s not even that bad you’re all just miserable bc you refuse to spend €200 on a portable AC last year and now they’re €300.

Bought a Midea PortaSplit A/C and my quality of life instantly went up.
The funniest thing about Germany is that people will spend €50k on a car, €1M on an apartment.
But somehow energy costs to run an A/C is where they draw the line.

@pettylark I think there’s also a certain degree of getting “sensually full” from seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing the meal while cooking it. By the time you bite into the food, you’ve already been “tasting” it for a while. This is also why it’s so nice to be cooked for sometimes.

Cooking for myself is weird. Sometimes the peak of the experience hits right around when I'm putting the final touches on whatever I'm making, and then eating the meal happens in more of a mellow afterglow state.
For a moment I thought this was a disappointing. That was so much effort! Shouldn't I be enjoying this more?? But then I realized it's a natural result of enjoying the process. I just spend an hour hanging out with all these ingredients; prepping, tasting, adjusting, marveling. What a lovely time.
The soup is good, but by the time it's in a bowl, it's a very familiar good.

@e_cdalton His post was in response to a question about daily moderate drinking, for which it is will established that it takes days to weeks for chemistry to balance out. Yes, the alcohol is out in a couple of hours; byproducts and neurotransmitters take much longer to balance out.

@kyoung375124 I would have to know more about what habitually means for you to speculate on this. But let’s assume for fairly metabolically healthy. In 5 days your body has cleared the alcohol, dealt with most of the inflammation and is repairing. Hope that helps

@RachelVT42 lol...there are so many of us Americans here in Europe just to live a great life with our families. With our six weeks leave and parental leave, we'll see more of the US and Europe this year than most Americans will in their lives.

Just a few facts for Europoors who don’t like hearing the Truth:
- tons of Europeans live in the US and have zero intention of ever moving back to Europe.
- some Americans do live in Europe, but that’s mostly retirees who live there part time.
- Europe needs to start working towards building its future instead of always lamenting its past.

@krassenstein Do NOT eat that supermarket sushi. German standards for meat/fish in grocery stores (refrigeration, etc) are abysmal. I’ve had food sickness like 10 times here 🤮

Trump’s US economy is unaffordable.
I’m in Germany and bought all of this for 5.98 Euros. ($6.88) at Aldi:
- 2 Coffees
- 2 Doughnuts
- 1 Cinnamon bun
- 1 Salmon Sushi Roll
The same would be $24 in Trump’s economy.

I suspect a lot of Americans here have visited tourist spots in Europe once and not gone to a typical Carrefour or Rewe or Waitrose. They put even the best US supermarkets to shame in both quality and selection. The better California chains are modelled on them. Not even close

I love America, but I hate to burst your bubble: if you are on Twitter, and you are getting posts about how Europeans visiting for the World Cup are completely in awe of American food and grocery stores— I have to be honest with you and tell you you are being fed complete nonsense by the algorithm. I’ve traveled to almost every European country, and there isn’t a single one which doesn’t have better grocery stores and higher-quality restaurant food than the USA. Just being honest, as a doctor should
