From Grieving to Healing

As we reflect on past mistakes, it’s important to be kind to ourselves. We can’t always foresee everything that could go wrong before we try something. Instead, we can grieve the choices we regret, forgive ourselves, and learn from the experience.

When we reflect on past mistakes, it’s easy to think, 'I should have done this!' or 'I should have known better!' But the better path usually becomes clear in hindsight. If we had known it was the right choice at the time, we likely would’ve taken it.

The goal in life isn’t to avoid mistakes entirely—it’s to learn, grow, and do better next time. As we gain experience, we get to know ourselves more, and we become better equipped to make wiser choices for our future.

While we’d all love to avoid decisions we later regret, the truth is that making mistakes is often a part of life.

When we truly know ourselves, we’re better at making healthy decisions about what to take on. We can find a healthy balance between not overloading ourselves and still challenging ourselves to grow.

The more we understand and trust ourselves, the more confidently we can make choices about our future, career, and relationships—decisions that align with who we are and are less likely to leave us with regret.

Choosing to give ourselves grace—whether it’s taking a break or acknowledging our limits—doesn’t mean we’re letting go of our standards. It’s about giving ourselves the care and support we need in the moment, so we can come back stronger and more balanced.

Having high standards for ourselves is important, but true strength comes from being flexible, not rigid. Flexibility helps us keep healthy standards while giving us the space to adjust when needed.

When we set high standards for certain areas of our lives, making mistakes can feel like a big failure. It can be hard to show ourselves grace when we’re not able to perform at our best.

Regret often comes from feeling disappointed in ourselves, especially when we don’t perform as well as we know we can. We all have moments where we could’ve done better, but the truth is, we’re human. Perfection isn’t something we can expect all the time—and that’s okay.

When we choose to forgive ourselves, we offer grace to our past selves, building a foundation of self-trust that can bring us strength in the future.

When we look back on our past choices and decide to take a different path, we honor the wisdom we've gained from those experiences—even if they felt negative or wasteful at the time.

By acknowledging our grief, we show ourselves that our emotions matter to us, no matter the situation.

When we process regret in a healthy way, we cultivate deeper trust in ourselves.

The more we can make peace with our past regrets and forgive ourselves, the easier it is to step forward with confidence and embrace new experiences that help us to grow.

Sometimes, fear of failure and regret can hold us back from trying new things. We might be so afraid of failing that we end up not trying at all. It’s okay to feel that fear—just remember, growth comes from taking those first steps, even if they’re imperfect.

Life lessons are valuable, and difficult experiences can bring important wisdom. But it’s just as important to honor how we’re feeling in the present. Learning from a mistake doesn’t mean we should overlook the pain it brings.

After making a mistake, we’re often encouraged to focus on the lessons we have learned. While growth is valuable, it's just as vital to honor the grief that comes with the choices we regret.

When we’re dealing with regret, we deserve to show ourselves the same kindness we give to others. By being compassionate with ourselves, we ease our own burden and are able to share that kindness more freely with those around us.
