On Monday, March 23, 2026, Grover Beach Police Department members were honored in front of the City Council for saving a life while on duty in 2025. It was a wonderful night to honor them all in front of friends, family, and colleagues!
The award recipients, all wearing red medals, were honored for two different lifesaving incidents occurring in 2025.
Officer Akai Reyna, far left, was honored for performing lifesaving CPR on an arrestee who had a medical emergency during transportation to the jail. After removing the arrestee from the rear of the patrol vehicle, Officer Reyna performed solo CPR for several minutes until fire and paramedics arrived and confirmed that a pulse had been restored. The arrestee was treated at the hospital and later released.
Senior Police Officer Walid Elsayed (to the right of Officer Reyna), Commander Nelida Aceves, Detective Joshua Ruiz, and Community Service Officer Randy Gonzalez earned a lifesaving medal for saving the life of an arrestee who attempted to strangle himself while in custody. The arrestee slipped his handcuffs to the front and attempted to strangle himself with a seatbelt. The team of officers worked together to cut the seatbelt wrapped tightly around the neck of the arrestee in the rear of the patrol vehicle. They were successful and provided medical treatment to the arrestee, who was later treated at the hospital.
Had it not been for the actions of all of these officers, two lives would've been lost. Please join us in congratulating all of them for a job well done!
