Back in my first year as faculty (2023), I had no roadmap -- just lots of ideas, energy, and questions. Two legendary CS professors — Hank Levy and David Culler (both now at Google)— reached out and said: “Here’s $50K. Go do something interesting.” Naturally, I also asked Hank for advice teaching. He said: “Don’t hope to build your new course from scratch. Build your lectures incrementally.” At the time, it felt like teaching advice. A year later, I realized, it’s also the best research advice I’ve ever gotten: Do big things, but do them incrementally; and keep doing them! I’m honored to receive the Google ML & Systems Junior Faculty Award 🎉 Huge thanks to Google, to Amin (fellow UCSDer!), and to Hank and David for the early support and continued belief in our work.
