This article is special because it makes us rethink the meaning and function of autonomy--a central concept in the sociology of culture.

Liu conducted rare interviews with two groups of Chinese artists-state, affiliated artists and independent artists, both of whom offer competing narratives of autonomy that emphasize the resources they have and downplay those that they lack vis-a-vis each other.
