Our son David, the pint-sized sports machine of a kid, turns 16 years old today. As it is tradition, I share the scary story of his birth every year on his birthday. Below is what I wrote some sixteen years ago. Thinking back it's still scary, and I thank God that everything turned out okay. Happy birthday David! ------------------- On Friday [November 14, 2008], about a quarter 'til 2:00pm I got a call from our nanny Jaimie... "Joel, Mickey is bleeding, we called 911, an ambulance is on the way, you need to go to the hospital." Let me back up a bit... My wife and I are pregnant with our third child. This pregnancy has had a few hiccups along the way which required hospitalizations each time. At the time of the call, we were at the 35 week point. For those who don't know (including me very recently) a baby is considered full term at 40 weeks. I left the meeting I was in, grabbed my bag, jay-walked across the street to my car, then drove very, very fast to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. Breaking the law type fast. Once in the maternity triage area, the doctor came in and said that the most likely cause of bleeding in this amount was an abruption - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abruptio_… - needless to say, we were both VERY scared. I'll never forget what the doctor said next, "35 weeks right? We need to take the baby now." Mickey and I both knew this was the very best option, and we agreed. They began to prep for an emergency c-section. At 3:43pm PST, Friday, November 14, 2008, Mickey gave birth to our third child, our first son, and his name is David John Telling. Even though he was 5 weeks early, he was 7 pounds and 20 inches long, and HEALTHY. Mickey was released from the hospital earlier today, but little David needs to spend a few more days in the NICU before he gets to come home.
