🇺🇸 To the surprise of no one, U.S. oil blasted past $100/barrel after Iran claims Israel hit their power plants. War escalation + Strait of Hormuz threats + Saudi facilities already smoking = textbook supply shock. Gas at the pump? It's about to get ugly fast. Source: @KobeissiLetter

🇾🇪🇮🇷 WHAT HAPPENS IF THE HOUTHIS CLOSE THE BAB AL-MANDAB STRAIT? Bab al-Mandab is the narrow doorway that connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. In other words, it’s the front door to the Suez Canal. Close it, and Europe’s fastest trade route to Asia instantly turns into a very long, very expensive road trip around Africa. And by “road trip,” we mean two extra weeks at sea, more fuel burned, higher insurance premiums, and shipping prices slamming through the roof. Now stack that on top of the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Hormuz hits supply. Bab al-Mandab hits movement. One makes oil scarce. The other makes everything late. Put them together and you get a system failure. Europe is first in line to feel it. Energy costs spike because Middle Eastern supply is constrained, and at the same time, everything from electronics to food takes longer and costs more to arrive. That neat little just-in-time supply chain Europe loves? Yeah, it just turned into “eventually, maybe.” Asia doesn’t get off easy either. It still has to deal with Hormuz squeezing its energy lifeline, while its exports to Europe now take the scenic route past Cape Town. Slower trade, higher costs, thinner margins. Everyone loses, just in slightly different flavors. Once ships start diverting en masse, costs explode. Fuel, crews, insurance, time; all up. That doesn’t stay in the shipping industry. It shows up in grocery bills, electricity prices, construction costs, basically anywhere something has to move… which is everywhere. Meanwhile, Gulf producers trying to work around Hormuz suddenly discover their backup plan runs straight into another blockade. The Red Sea route only works if Bab al-Mandab is open. This is where the situation stops being regional and starts being global leverage. And it exposes something uncomfortable: globalization is not some unstoppable force of nature. It’s a fragile system held together by a handful of narrow waterways that work beautifully… right up until someone decides they don’t. If both chokepoints stay under pressure, expect inflation to come roaring back, supply chains to stretch like cheap elastic, and policymakers to start using phrases like “unprecedented” again, which is always a great sign things are going very badly. Because once Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab are both in play, this becomes about whether the world economy can function when two strips of water become bargaining chips.
