@B_nkSpace The National Grid is required to keep the lights on and ensure enough electricity is available. There are financial penalties if they fail to do that, and independent auditing of their performance. Why does it matter if it's from our taxes or our bills, we pay either way.

@HassiumQ So where's the obligation on the National Grid? And your point on "Who Cares" doesn't stand if it's coming from the taxpayers money. You are the prime example of bullshit baffles.

@B_nkSpace We pay for all infrastructure through our bills and through taxes. It's always our money that pays.

@HassiumQ The National Grid is a private company, there is no obligation which means tax payers money will have to be used. Therefore people will care.

@B_nkSpace No, you've been saying that the local distribution isn't up to the job. Although that may be the case in some places, according to the National Grid there is some ongoing work, but generally most places are fine. Especially as it's decades away from happening anyway.

@B_nkSpace Who cares if they are or not, it's national infrastructure and if the government want us to go EV then the DNOs are under an obligation to facilitate that. It's just engineering.

@HassiumQ Stop now your putting to much load onto the Google servers. Whitepapers are being produced rite now on the matter. You literally just dont want to admit im right our substaions are not upto the job.

@B_nkSpace Imagine if a street of EV cars were able to have solar and home batteries instead of investing in a transformer and distribution upgrade. Not all cars will charge all night every night, average U.K. miles is 30 ~7.5kWh a day per car. Cars with ranges of ~250 - 300 miles now.

@HassiumQ My point still stands Substations will need major investment if a street all decided to install EV chargers no one asked about your van.

@B_nkSpace If you're aware of harmonics then you'll know you get harmonics injected into the supply by any electronic equipment and that there are regulations about how noisy an appliance can be, that includes the battery chargers in electric vehicles. Do you not think the grid know this?

@HassiumQ Something i hadn't considered would be the harmonics it would introduce too. But you know about that because you've "Googled" it.

@B_nkSpace We have an 80 amp incomer fuse, although we could uprate to 100 amp (our DNO said so).

@HassiumQ The "Circuit" you talk of is a single MCB. What is you main incomer rated at? Im not here to educate you. Go back to telling you friends how great EVs are cos your boring me now.

@B_nkSpace The circuit is 32 amp, just as it is for an electric shower / cooker. So, are there issues with everyone in a street having an electric shower or immersion heater? You can’t guarantee that a few houses on that phase won’t use them the same time either.

@HassiumQ I then "Googled" it as you suggest all the time and i was 2amps off, next question.

@B_nkSpace Maximum of 6.6kW with my van, for about 2.5 hours then tailing down for the remaining 2.5 for a full charge. Can be set for 3kW and timed. My Zappi can control to maximise my solar panel usage by charging my car with any surplus, and can use if this then that for smart control.

@B_nkSpace You seem interested enough to ask the question of what a 7kW charge point would do to the grid. I'm the "saving a bunch of money driving an EV" type of EV driver. I'm also very aware of how to charge an EV, how much it costs, and what the load on the electricity supply is.

@B_nkSpace Well as you don’t seem to be aware of how much demand cars will put on the local network, or how grid aware chargers are being mandated, or how there have been plans in place for the electric heat and transport transition. I assumed you were not an expert in the field.

@B_nkSpace In your opinion of course. I’m guessing you don’t work in the electrical distribution industry or you would have been aware of the work that is constantly being done to manage the grid and local distribution networks. Grid aware can go on single phase just as easily and has.

@HassiumQ 3/ "Grid aware" I believe is for the 22kw 3 phase chargers. Most people homes are single phase supplies so my point still stands our substations are far from ready.

@B_nkSpace Not really, you seem very interested in a sector of an industry which requires a great deal of knowledge to understand. A sector where there are plenty of experienced people and companies who are responsible for making sure things work, or they get financial penalties.

@B_nkSpace How about you Google it if you’re that interested in it. The loads on the grid are monitored using scada so it’s easy to build a smart grid using that data. It is the job of the DNO to make sure that the local distribution is up to the job so why not just let them do their job.

@HassiumQ 1/ Grid aware hows that work, how will it know if the substation is nearing its maximum load and about to trip? Its not the same as using the appliances you mentioned there's a massive difference in the pull.

@wakeupworld15 No, it’s that we have a certain amount of time on this Earth and my interest in things outside my expertise is only cursory and fleeting. I don’t have time to learn about a whole different area when there are already experts in that field doing the work they’re trained for.
