Coinbase scaled our Users service to sustain over 1.5M identity reads/sec. Here’s how: - We broke the monolithic user object into independent, logical groups called "Fragments.” - Migrated from a single MongoDB cluster to a federated system using both MongoDB and DynamoDB. - For concurrent writes, we implemented Optimistic Concurrency Control (OCC), which uses a resource version field for a compare-and-swap on write, avoiding slow global locks. - For strong read-after-write guarantees on critical flows, we use "Freshness Tokens." These tokens are passed on the read request to guarantee the returned data is at least as fresh as the version associated with the token, bypassing the cache if necessary. - We introduced a load-shedding mechanism that dynamically diverts a portion of incoming traffic to a dummy target group when the service detects overload, preventing a MongoDB death loop and enabling the service to degrade gracefully. This architecture gives us the scalability to handle the crypto market's massive, unpredictable peaks and the resilience to be a service that Coinbase can build on with trust.
