The story behind Guns N’ Roses’ “Don’t Cry” begins in 1985, when Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin wrote their first song together for the band, even before Slash, Duff, and Steven Adler had fully joined the group. It all stemmed from a real-life love triangle. Izzy had been dating a girl named Monique Lewis. When they broke up, Axl began an intense relationship with her. One night, outside The Roxy club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, she decided to break up with Axl. He sat down on the sidewalk and began crying inconsolably. She kept repeating to him over and over, “Don’t cry.” The next day, Axl, still heartbroken, went to Izzy’s house (with whom he had been feuding for months over the same girl). Instead of fighting, they sat down and in just five minutes wrote the song: Axl had the sad lyrics and Izzy a guitar melody just as melancholic. Although it was written very early on, the band didn’t include it on *Appetite for Destruction* because they couldn’t get the right sound. It was finally released in 1991, on the albums *Use Your Illusion I* and *Use Your Illusion II*, with two slightly different versions. It became one of their biggest hits and is part of the famous ballad trilogy alongside “November Rain” and “Estranged.” Axl was so affected by that relationship that he got Monique’s name tattooed on his arm and dedicated another song to her: “Rocket Queen.” The music video, filled with surreal images, pain, and symbolism, features Stephanie Seymour (Axl’s girlfriend at the time) and has a curious detail: Izzy no longer appears because he was about to leave the band. They even put up a sign that read “Where’s Izzy?” as an inside joke. “Don’t Cry” was literally born from real tears on the sidewalk in Los Angeles and became an anthem of heartbreak and comfort for millions of people. A classic 90s rock power ballad.
