Hymns of Grace

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” was written by Joachim Neander in the 1600s and has been sung by the church for centuries as a call to praise God for who He is and how He cares for His people. These lyrics direct our attention to the Lord as Creator, Sustainer, and faithful Shepherd. He reigns over all things, provides what we need, and surrounds His people with mercy and care, giving us confidence in who He is. Scripture reminds us that “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11). Because He is good and sovereign, we can trust Him in every circumstance. This hymn calls us to respond rightly, with a life of praise. “Let all that is in me adore Him.” Every part of our lives belongs to the Lord, and He is worthy of our worship. Men of the Word is a ministry focused on grounding men in the truth of Scripture and strengthening them for faithful leadership in every area of life. Through biblical teaching, fellowship, and accountability, it seeks to equip men to grow in Christ and serve faithfully in their homes, the church, and the world. This Reformation Day, Season 6 of Hymnology continues with “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” (#136 in Hymns of Grace) — a hymn that echoes the heart of the Reformation: Christ alone saves, and to Him alone belongs the glory. Written by Charles Wesley in 1739 to mark the first anniversary of his conversion, it’s filled with gratitude and praise — a declaration that Christ has broken the power of sin and set the prisoner free. Its opening line was inspired by the words of Wesley’s mentor, Peter Böhler: “If I had a thousand tongues, I would praise Christ with them all.” Though written more than two centuries after the Reformation, this hymn springs from that same gospel truth — rejoicing in the grace of God, the finished work of Christ, and the believer’s freedom in Him. Though Doudney was better known in her day for her novels, poetry, and magazine contributions, only a few of her hymns have remained in use. Among them, The Master Has Come is one of her clearest and most enduring expressions of faith, pointing believers to follow Christ with steadfast hope. Following Christ often brings trials and temptations, yet God’s Spirit strengthens the weary, and His people press on with joy, looking upward to their King and resting in the hope of His kingdom. In Hymns of Grace you will find lyrics to hymns that are sometimes left out of newer hymnals or have appeared in earlier printings. One such example is the hymn “I Am His and He Is Mine” (No. 81). Written by Wade Robinson, it has often been published with only three verses, or with a third verse that speaks of a symbolic, physical embrace of Christ. In Hymns of Grace, however, we chose to preserve a version of verse 3 that had largely fallen out of use — a verse that speaks of Christ’s love, not merely symbolic, but a personal and covenant love that makes us His forever, the very love displayed at Calvary. Season 6 of Hymnology continues with Hark, the Glad Sound! Written by Philip Doddridge in 1735, this hymn was first sung on Christmas Day that year in his church at Northampton, England. It is a hymn of Advent and gospel hope, announcing the long-promised Savior who comes to bring freedom, healing, and life. These lyrics echo the words of Isaiah and Luke’s Gospel — proclaiming Christ as the One who sets prisoners free, gives sight to the blind, binds up the brokenhearted, and pours out His grace on the poor (Isaiah 61:1–2; Luke 4:18). In Hymns of Grace, number 39, Eternal Light! Eternal Light! is a hymn that Pastor John MacArthur specifically asked to be included in the hymnal. Written by Thomas Binney (1798–1874), it proclaims the truth that God is light, and His light provides eternal illumination. Ian Murray once shared with Pastor John that this was among Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ favorite hymns — a testimony to its depth and power. The original melody attached to this hymn felt dated, so Philip Webb and Mark Rice worked together to create a fresh melody so that this hymn would live on in Hymns of Grace. The hymn itself confronts us with God’s holiness and our own unworthiness. How can sinful man, dark in mind and dim in spirit, stand before the brilliance of God’s uncreated light? On our own, we cannot. Only Christ makes a way — as the hymn declares, “an offering and a sacrifice, a Holy Spirit’s energies, an advocate with God.” Through His atoning work, those once in ignorance and darkness can now dwell in the eternal Light through the eternal Love. It captures the weight of God’s majesty while leading us to the comfort of the gospel. By grace, sinners are made ready to see His face and rejoice in His presence forever.
