Great question. Dr. Weiler is primarily active through UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies, which has its own YouTube channel @uvadivisionofperceptualstu9909 and Instagram @uvadops. She also writes regularly for Psychology Today. Hopefully she joins X soon. In the meantime, hear her live at #IRVALATAM2026 on May 16. 🙂

A neuroscientist trained at NIH and UCLA is now studying out-of-body experiences, mediumship and remote viewing at the University of Virginia. She left a prestigious mainstream research career to do it. Her colleagues think she's taking a serious risk. She thinks the data left her no choice. Meet Dr. Marina Weiler. 🧵 [1/7]

In 1983, a U.S. Army intelligence officer was called into a meeting at Fort Meade, Maryland. He had no idea what it was about. He left that meeting as a government psychic spy. Meet Major Paul H. Smith, PhD. 🧵 [1/7]

In October 2025 Paul appeared alongside UFO historian Richard Dolan on Third Eye Drops, covering psychic espionage, UAPs and the mysteries of consciousness. In January 2026 he recorded a full hour on the New Thinking Allowed podcast walking through the experimental protocols that define legitimate remote viewing. He also appeared at the IRVA 2025 conference in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, where he presented on the deep relationship between remote viewing and UFO research. [6/7]

After the CIA declassified Stargate in 1995, Paul founded Remote Viewing Instructional Services and has spent the decades since teaching civilians what he learned inside the program. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in philosophy of mind, consciousness and philosophy of science. He has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, the History Channel, Joe Rogan Questions Everything, Coast to Coast AM, and in the documentary Superhuman: The Invisible Made Visible. [5/7]

Paul also taught CRV to incoming Stargate recruits. Among his students: Lyn Buchanan, Mel Riley and David Morehouse, three of the most well-known remote viewers to come out of the program. He is the longest-serving Controlled Remote Viewing instructor active in the world today, with a career spanning more than 40 years. [4/7]

Inside Stargate, Paul was personally trained by Ingo Swann and Dr. Hal Puthoff at Stanford Research Institute, two of the scientists who invented Controlled Remote Viewing. He served as an operational remote viewer, conducting thousands of training and live intelligence sessions. He wrote the official U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency manual on CRV. That document is still the foundational reference the global remote viewing community uses today. [3/7]

Paul had been a military intelligence officer specializing in Middle Eastern studies. Arabic-trained. Desert Storm veteran. A conventional career by every measure. Then in September 1983 he was recruited into Project Stargate, the U.S. Army's classified remote viewing program, without knowing it existed until the moment he was invited to join. [2/7]

Glad to see our friend Marina featured by the International Remote Viewing Association ahead of her presentation at their IRVA Latam (Latin American) Online Conference on May 16! We interviewed her last month before she joined us at James Fox’s Varginha Press Conference in DC! patreon.com/posts/15034895…

@grimnotions The Bigelow essays are a great entry point. Dr. Marina Weiler, one of our May 16 speakers, was a 2021 runner-up in that same competition. Now she is running empirical OBE studies at UVA. What convinced you most: the NDE accounts or the veridical perception cases?

@IRVAtweets After reading the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness essays on near death experiences, I'm convinced it's non-local.

Thank you, Dr. Stein! We would love to make that connection and will DM you. Her work on out-of-body experiences and non-local consciousness would be a wonderful fit for Unpacking Possibility. 🙏 And if you or your listeners want to hear Marina live first, she presents at our IRVA LATAM Online Conference on May 16. Tickets are just $10 for the first 500: irva.org/irva-latam-con…

Marina published a peer-reviewed preprint on remote viewing research in September 2025, framing RV as evidence of the mind's non-local capacities. She writes a column called Beyond the Ordinary in Psychology Today. She appeared on podcasts in February 2026 discussing the Telepathy Tapes phenomenon and what the neuroscience actually shows. She is one of the most credentialed researchers working openly in this space today. [6/7]

In a 2026 interview, she said this about why scientists suppress consciousness research: "Many scientists build their careers within the materialistic, physicalist framework. When you say consciousness is not produced by the brain, you're ruining people's careers. And no one wants that." She said it anyway. [5/7]

At UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies, Marina now studies: Out-of-body experiences, including people who perceive accurate information from outside their physical body during clinical events. Mental mediumship and what it reveals about memory and identity. Remote viewing as a potential expression of non-local consciousness. Psychic experiences in non-speaking autistic individuals. [4/7]

Then something shifted. The deeper Marina studied the brain and consciousness, the more the materialist model, the idea that the mind is simply what the brain produces, failed to account for what she was seeing in the data. She joined the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies to investigate the cases that mainstream neuroscience cannot explain.

Marina holds a PhD in neuroscience from UNICAMP in Brazil. Her doctoral research used fMRI to study Alzheimer's disease. She then joined the National Institutes of Health, where she investigated brain stimulation as a treatment for age-related cognitive decline. After NIH, she moved to UCLA to study disorders of consciousness in traumatic brain injury patients. This is not a fringe background.
