Randomized control trial of online learning among cadets at West Point Findings: Online instruction reduces a student’s final grade by 22 percent of a standard deviation. The impact is larger for males, at 27 percent of a standard deviation, compared to 9 percent of a standard deviation for females. Negative effects from online learning across the entire grade distribution but biggest impacts on the least academically prepared students. "We also find that online students are less likely to report feeling connected and focused compared to in-person students." The results are probably atypical because…”West Point students are among the nation’s most disciplined young people. If online learning has negative effects at West Point, what does that mean for the typical student? educationnext.org/zooming-to-cla…

Bad mentors see you as building their brand. They take credit for your success. Good mentors see you as a younger version of themselves. They help you follow in their footsteps. Great mentors see your potential to be a better version of yourself. They help you find your path. tedtalks.social/WLAdam

The 1-20 Number Path connects to the MathRack, by changing colors every five numbers, so that children can see an iconic representation of what they do with the concrete manipulative. #NumberPaths are recommended for #Kindergarten and #1stgraders instead of Number Lines.

Thank you for the high praise! And I appreciate reading what you took from the book!

I've been a math educator since 2003 and Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by @pgliljedahl has more potential to improve the way we teach mathematics than any other book I have ever read. I wrote a blog post to share why we should all read it: robertkaplinsky.com/you-must-read-…
