FYI.

I'm on the positive side of .500 here, but not quite bullish on them making the playoffs. I'll go with 84-78. They'll be in there right at the end, and maybe they beat out the field. It'll be a "competitive" year.

The sooner Gregory Santos is up the better. (Maybe they should convert Whisenhunt to short-inning reliever too.) We'll see if Harris or Bednar can improve their command enough to come up and be leverage arms. I have a feeling they'll be looking at bullpen help come trade deadline

Season prediction thread: What does this Giants roster do well? They've got Rafael Devers and Matt Chapman as their stars. Lee, Adames, and Ramos are strong supporting cast members who can conceivably be better than last year. Arraez and Bader are good floor raisers.

Matos posted a 77 wRC+ in a full High-A season and got booted off of every top 100 prospect list immediately afterward. His one above average tool is the ability to make contact, which has translated to a .266 xBA in his AAA career and a .240 xBA in his MLB career.

Good for Jared Oliva, but from a roster construction standpoint I don't get it. He's 30, had a higher whiff rate than Heliot Ramos last year, and a 28% hard hit rate. He might be a 28th man in September but fourth outfielder? Wild.

@BaseballJeff1 Yeah, and with no LHB either. I think Schmitt can be pretty good in a Slater esque role but dedicating your other two non-C guys to older RHH speed/defense utility men is a little strange

@ImNotHuman123 He's great on a bench that's already pretty solid, which is not the Giants' bench. A roster spot is a lot to commit to his 1 skill, even if it is elite.

So now it's an unceremonious end to Matos' time on the Giants 40-man roster and possibly his time in the Giants organization. He probably gets traded/is claimed but it wouldn't exactly surprise me if he's not. So the wind blows

I don't think it's been hidden that I've been out on Matos for quite some time now. I was high on him early, then everything went wrong in 2022. Despite that the Giants kept giving him chances but he's never come close to looking like the prospect we'd hoped.

Bivens’ velo has been down all Spring, he’s got options, they were going to have to cut someone to get both Winn and Kilian in the bullpen. That’s just how it unfolds sometimes. We’ll probably see him by mid-May
