Anthony Koch is right. Mark Carney is not Justin Trudeau. That should be obvious, except, it seems, to the Conservative Party of Canada. For the past year, Pierre Poilievre, Andrew Scheer and the Conservative team have stubbornly refused to adapt. This week, it looks like they might be testing a new line of attack: anti-intellectual populism. That won’t work either. This isn’t the United States. It looks like the only way that Conservatives can actually adapt is with new leadership.

Poilievre gets a D+ for his appearance at the Canadian Club. Calling a Harvard and Oxford-trained economist "very badly educated" in front of a room full of Bay Street professionals, many of whom almost certainly have similar credentials or deep respect for them, is politically illiterate. That crowd doesn't respond to anti-intellectualism. That's a Brampton arena line, not a Canadian Club line. It's also a strategic own-goal at the worst possible time. Poilievre's core problem right now is that a significant chunk of Canadians who were open to him concluded he wasn't serious or credible enough to be PM. Mocking someone's Harvard and Oxford economics degrees in front of the business establishment confirms exactly that doubt. And Carney's team will clip it. That soundbite - "very badly educated" - doesn't stay in the Canadian Club. It travels. It becomes the story. It hands the Liberals a ready-made contrast ad: serious, credentialed, globally respected PM vs. the guy sneering at credentials to a room that has them. The D+ is only because he showed up and stayed on script for most of it. The education attack wasn't a slip. He'd already said it in a recent interview, which means nobody in his inner circle killed it.
