The Israel Academy mourns the passing of Academy Member Prof. Michael Rabin of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Prof. Rabin was one of the founders of modern computer science and a pioneer of mathematical logic. He made groundbreaking contributions to logic, algorithms, cryptography, and computational complexity. A recipient of the Turing Award and the Israel Prize. Philosopher Jürgen Habermas passed away last week at the age of 96. His work on communication, rationality, and society made him one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, and a central intellectual figure in Germany and beyond. The Vice President of the Israel Academy, Professor Margalit Finkelberg, represented the Academy at the inaugural meeting of the International Community (Koinon) of Academies, held in Athens and hosted by the Academy of Athens. The Academy was invited to join the community as a founding member, and we were honored to take part in this event. The meeting, held in the grand neoclassical building of the Academy of Athens, featured lectures and academic sessions on a wide range of topics - from artificial intelligence and climate change to archaeology and the history of science - as well as inter-academy working meetings. התכבדנו להגיש אתמול, 24 בפברואר, את דוח מצב המדע תשפ"ו/ 2025 לנשיא המדינה מר יצחק הרצוג, בבית הנשיא בירושלים. את עיקרי הממצאים הציגו נשיא האקדמיה פרופ' דוד הראל, יו"ר ועדת הדוח חברת האקדמיה פרופ' עדי קמחי, ויו"ר תת-הוועדה למדעים המדויקים פרופ' מיכל פלדמן. בפגישה נדונו האתגרים המרכזיים של מערכת המחקר בישראל, ובהם הירידה המתמשכת בהשקעה הלאומית במו"פ אקדמי, השפעות המלחמה על פעילות המחקר והתגברות החרם האקדמי, בדגש על האתגרים מולם ניצבים חוקרים צעירים. כן נדונו חיזוק הממשק בין האקדמיה לתעשייה והאתגרים הייחודיים במדעי הרוח והחברה, לרבות הצורך בבחינה מחודשת של מדדי ההערכה להערכת מצוינות אקדמית. לצד האתגרים הודגשו גם חוזקותיו של המדע הישראלי והישגיו בזירה הבין-לאומית. אנו מודים לנשיא המדינה על המפגש ועל מחויבותו ארוכת השנים לקידום המדע וההשכלה הגבוהה בישראל. לקריאת הדוח המלא>> academy.ac.il/Index3/Entry.a… צילום: באדיבות בית הנשיא. @Isaac_Herzog
