Buona Pasquetta! Easter Monday, or Pasquetta, is also a public holiday in Italy. It is a day dedicated to relaxation & outdoor activities spent enjoying picnics with family & friends. The long weekend allows Italians to embrace the arrival of spring after the solemnity of Lent.

The Last Supper was a mural completed by Leonardo da Vinci. This painting depicts the shock & horror of the twelve disciples upon learning that one amongst themselves was going to betray Jesus Christ. The work was commissioned in 1494 by Ludovico Sforza, who was the Duke of Milan

On Il pesce d’aprile or April Fools’ Day, the oldest joke in Italy was the promise by Buoncompagno from Florence in the XIII century to fly over Bologna with the machine he invented. The whole town gathered to see the flight, which actually never took place. Pesce d’aprile!

🇮🇹 Una Storia Segreta 🇺🇸 During WWII, under FDR, 600K Italians were classified as enemy aliens in the US & faced internment, surveillance & violations of their civil liberties, an overlooked chapter in our nation’s history. The classification was removed on Columbus Day 1942.

A key Easter tradition of Italian Americans in NYC is rooted in the kitchen where we prepare foods with religious symbolism. Among them is Pane di Pasqua, an Easter bread decorated with colored eggs, representing the tomb and resurrection.

🌿 Buona Domenica delle Palme. The NYPD Columbia Association wishes a blessed Palm Sunday to all who celebrate as Holy Week begins. May it be a time of reflection, faith, and renewal.

Easter is observed in Italy with a week of processions & services, followed by feasting and celebrations on Sunday & La Pasquetta, little Easter, on Monday. Solemn processions include special statues of the Madonna & Christ that are carried through town by people in costume.

Wishing a blessed Palm Sunday to Christians across NYC. In italy, while palm branches are used, olive branches are more common in many parts of the country, as they are more readily available and symbolize peace. Wishing all a peaceful start to the most Holy Week. 🙏✝️
