Happy Easter Eve 𝕏. ☀️☕️🐣 The first bruised edge of amethyst light brushes the ancient shoulders of the far eastern ridge, and I lower myself onto my old weathered porch swing, its boards cool and slightly damp beneath my palms, a silent sentinel overlooking the river’s obsidian ribbon as it glides through the valley’s deep, enfolding embrace. This is the hushed, trembling threshold of this dawn…the suspended breath between shadow and resurrection. The air, a tolerant 62° wraps around me like velvet, heavy with dew. It carries the raw, mineral tang of damp stone, the green breath of damp fern and moss, and the dark, perfume of the earth itself stirring toward rebirth. Pine and oak resin lace the breeze with sharp, spicy incense that prickles the nostrils and awakens the nerves in quiet liturgical reverence. The river rises in a metallic, almost electric coolness that meets the sun’s first tender warmth, creating a delicate, living tension against my skin. In this radiant unfolding, the veil grows gossamer-thin. Memories drift upward like iridescent mist from the river’s shimmering, silken skin, carrying the faint, sweet scent of my childhood springs. I remember the sudden, heart-stopping apparition of my Aunt June Green emerging from the dappled shadows…clad in a moth-eaten suit of cheap synthetic fur that rasped and whispered with every step, her painted mask locked in a frozen, too-wide grin of synthetic glee. To my small, wide-eyed self she was no gentle spring herald but a towering, totemic specter of the woods. I huddled against my mother in the tall, dew-heavy grass that brushed cold and tickling against my bare legs, heart hammering like a frantic bird against my ribs, genuinely terrified by the strange, upright rabbit stalking through the dogwoods with its basket of violently painted neon eggs that glowed unnaturally bright against the green. That visceral trembling…equal parts terror and enchantment…felt as real and electric as the river’s cold current tugging at my ankles, a childhood rite where myth and mountain reality blurred beneath the whispering Appalachian canopy. The horizon kindles now into an opulent liturgy of color. Mauve dissolves into an ardent, sacrificial rose that stains the sky like spilled wine, then yields to a sudden deluge of molten aureate that floods the valley with liquid gold. The river catches this celestial fire, its surface transforming into a living, breathing mosaic of topaz, fugitive sapphire, and flashing silver, each ripple a cool, liquid kiss that sends glittering shards of light dancing across the porch and over my skin. The steam from my coffee rises in fragrant, dark-roasted coils…bitter, earthy, and comforting…curling upward from the warm ceramic mug cradled in my palms, its heat seeping pleasantly into chilled fingers while the river’s eternal hymn murmurs below and the wind sighs softly, almost mournfully, through the hemlocks, brushing cool fingers across my cheeks and stirring the fine hairs at the nape of my neck. The worn boards creak with a low, familiar groan beneath my weight, their weathered grain rough yet grounding against the soles of my feet, anchoring me to this sacred vigil where time itself seems to pause…braiding the present’s quiet, luminous splendor with the golden, faintly haunted threads of a mountain upbringing. It is a landscape both rugged and resilient, a living poem of stone, water, and green shadow that reminds us every dawn…especially this one…renews not only the bruised and beautiful land, but the soul who once wandered these misty shores and now returns in grateful, trembling wonder.
