This represents the most significant change in the UK's income data collection methods in a generation. ‼️ But crucially, while revised headline rates may be lower, this doesn't mean people suddenly have more money in their pockets. Far too many families are still in poverty.

Important context for the child poverty figures published for NI. You can't compare last years 24% figure with this year's 19% figure as the measurement has changed. It's good news that NI has lowest child poverty in the UK - but still sitting at around 1/5 children.

📊 A big change to the way official poverty statistics are constructed comes into effect this year. Family Resources Survey responses and official government benefit records will now be linked for the first time. 📝 In this explainer, we take you through what the changes mean.

Child poverty is set to fall by 3 percentage points in 2026-27, primarily due to the two-child limit being abolished. But in the following years, the child poverty rate will start rising again. By the end of the decade, the projected rate is just 0.5 percentage points below last year.

🚨 BREAKING: 6 million people are facing hunger in the UK, including 2m children. This is a 20% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels. These new stats from DWP reveal a heart-breaking injustice; too many people are being trapped in severe hardship.

Save the Children Northern Ireland
Latest UK Gov stats show 1 in 5 children in NI in poverty. 1 in 3 in some of our communities! Beyond the headline data we believe there's a deeper story of a widening inequality gap for children here when it comes to support they're given compared to other parts of these islands!

New data shows 4 million children are living in poverty. Removal of the two-child limit is an important first step in making life better for kids. But govt will have to invest in sustained support for children & families to meet its ambition to give every child the best start.

NEW: Are fewer people living in poverty than previously thought? New DWP statistics with improved methodology out today have reduced official measures of income poverty, but it’s too early to tell where estimates will end up after further changes are made:

New stats show rents have increased by over 25% in some areas since LHA rates were frozen. Rent growth recently has been exceptionally high, levels of housing support are inadequate. The result? Families cover their rent with money meant for food and toiletries.

Reducing child poverty isn't easy but we have a very good understanding of what works. With the Scottish govt set to announce child poverty statistics this week, @stephenboydecon in this piece for The Daily Record argues benefits play a huge role. dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/…

The other huge error in what he says is that it ignores the national insurance receipts of £204bn which are in fact used to pay state pensions and a small number of other benefits. So the cost of much ‘welfare’ spending does come out of the £331.4bn income tax receipts.
Paul Lewis tweet media
Matthew Elliott@matthew_elliott

The Government will collect £331bn in income tax this year, and spend £333bn on welfare. In other words, we now spend more on people not working than we raise from those who do. And the cost? Debt per person has risen from £11.5k in 2000 (inflation adjusted) to over £41k today.
