#Retirement doesn’t mean withdrawing. Kadir Atalay, Anita Staneva, & @RongZhu5’s new study finds retirees build more social connections, volunteer more & even boost their #MentalHealth. The real cost? Raising retirement age may quietly harm older adults. doi.org/10.3368/jhr.06…

3/4 The authors found 5.5% mortality reduction for women, driven by non-cardiovascular causes and inconclusive evidence for men due to pre-existing trends, highlighting gender differences in program impacts.

Read the #OpenAccess paper here: "Effects of School-Based Mental Health Services on Youth Outcomes" by Ezra Golberstein, @Irina_Zay , Aaron Sojourner & Mark A. Sander doi.org/10.3368/jhr.12…
Jennifer Doleac@jenniferdoleac

We know that access to mental health care — especially for at-risk youth — reduces crime and recidivism. But how do we increase access to & take-up of care? What policy levers should we pull? School-based mental health services are one option, but there is remarkably little evidence on the impacts of these programs, especially on behaviors like violence and criminal justice involvement. So, I was very excited to see this study, which recently came out in @J_HumanResource, using rich data from Minnesota, including juvenile justice records(!). The punchline? Promising, but we definitely need more work in this space. We need to figure this out! Check out my interview with Ezra Golberstein for more.

4/4 The crisis is real but likely closer to the 66% rise in suicides than the 228% jump in reported behaviors. Accurate measurement matters for effective intervention. #MortalitySpecialIssue Read the full article here: doi.org/10.3368/jhr.02…

3/4 Han Choi, @CorredorWaldron, Janet Currie, & Chris Felton found that #SuicidalIdeation diagnoses exploded by 459% (driven largely by reporting changes), while actual youth #suicides rose 66% – tragic, but a very different magnitude.

🚨New paper alert!🚨 I continue to be surprised by how much heat and cold impact different groups in society differently We find heat deaths are way more concentrated among young manual/agricultural workers, while cold deaths are more concentrated among older non-workers (1/5)

3/4 Young agricultural workers (15-24) face 10x higher heat death risk than same-age professionals. Yet cold kills differently: it claims older, non-working populations.
