I think that I'm going to end up more disappointed in our Synod than in whoever wins the election. The things people are willing to say about brothers in Christ are things that shouldn't even be thought...much less posted openly online (mostly on Facebook).

@tinytomahawk What fruit are you producing by accusing me of self-righteous hand-wringing in a way that twists my words, assumes sinful motives, and uses a meme to make fun of me?

@J_Petzold So what fruit are you producing here other than self-righteous hand-wringing?

@thesolafeed I hope that's all it is, but I still think the rhetoric could be different and more charitable. I have opinions about the direction of Synod, but I still hope to express disagreements with charity, understanding, and brotherly love. (Alas, I am a sinner and here condemn myself!)

@J_Petzold "Both imply contempt for the people supporting them." I mean it could just imply wariness of the direction people are trying to take the synod?

@tinytomahawk I didn't use the word "nice". But how does it go? "They will know we are Christians by our..." Oh man, what was that next part? I think it was "by our podcasts and online posts". That it. That's what it was. Got me.

Confessional Lutheranism is interesting to me because it’s like the Bizarro world of Episcopalianism. The liturgical traditionalists are Confederate sympathizers; evolution isn’t real; people watch Fox News; the ‘liberals’ are Boomer-vangelicals who want contemporary worship.

@IlleCaeliferus 😂 Give me a break. That's the pot calling the kettle black. Good will and charitability? Please repent. I mean that in love.

@J_Petzold Missouri demonstrated the vacuum of good will and charitability when it inaugurated the crusade against Stone Choir. You're all oblivious to what's coming.

The actual big bifurcating line in the synod is what you think of cohabitation and premarital sex and how to address it. I know this ain't sexy but that issue is the single biggest cleavage point in the data, it slices right through the "public tribes," and it's one we leave up to pastoral discretion.

Having actually done stuff like cluster analysis and latent class analysis and and other grouping techniques on LCMS data I can say with confidence: The subgroups we talk about are fake. The real divides are invisible.
LangeradoSoul 🍷🫓🍷@lagerandgospel2

LCMS subgroup identity is fascinating & helpful, but I wonder it’s impact. Lutheranism worship of Jesus is at its heart confessional, sacramental, & (c)atholic. How we understand & practice that seems to be what consistently unites us or gives us division overall.

Not that we can't openly talk about candidates. We should. We did create a democratized way of selecting our leaders. But it also means we have to be that much more careful in our conduct, charitability, and tact. And to trust the Lord wills and will use whoever is elected.

Honestly, it makes me wonder how many would take pot-shots at me behind my back--or already have. Do we really want to be that kind of church? Would Christ? What a terrible witness--not just to the outside world, but to the people in our churches. And we wonder why people leave.

@J_Petzold Thankfully, both Harrison and Biermann are confessional, faithful, and pastoral. The synod will be blessed to have either one at the helm.

Would it be helpful to have a humorous guide to the various ‘factions’ within the LCMS? Or would it be needlessly divisive?

Forget just giving the Council of Presidents the title "bishop", just give all pastors in the LCMS the title. - me, service at a church in *Antioch*
