💂The British Army's super-regiment concept has been a mixed bag. intended to reduce the number of regiments and corps - because an army of 73,000 really doesn't need 62 different cap badges. 💂The British Army's regimental system has many strengths - distinct identities create a unique sense of belonging that promotes esprit de corps and unit cohesion in combat. 💂But we do need to reduce the administrative burden of so many cap badges. It should be entirely possible to streamline the organisation so that we look to the future while paying homage to the past. 💂Previous consolidations have worked well, such as the Royal Army Medical Services, which merged the RAMC, QARANC, and Dental Corps into a single unit. 💂Similarly, the Guards, Scots, Rifles, Gurkhas, Paras, and Rangers, have all become strong multi-battalion super-regiments. 💂But some of the other infantry regiments created 20 years ago have not established strong identities, and it shows in their recruiting. So there may be a case to create two or three new super-regiments? 💂Could we merge the Yorkshire, Duke of Lancaster's, and Mercian regiments into a new "King's Regiment?" And what do we do with the Royal Anglian and PWRR? Should we expand the Fusiliers to include Scots, Irish and Welsh Fusilier battalions? 💂Should we also consolidate the number of RAC cap badges creating just five or six: Household Cavalry, Dragoons, Hussars, Lancers, and RTR regiments? 💂Many people would argue that we have reached a point where the Army needs to grow rather than shrink further. This is true, but we need a regimental structure that will bear the test of time. 💂Regiments like the Royal Signals need to embrace computers, communications, and AI, rather than being simply about radios. 💂What I suggest will be anathema to some, but the most important reason to review the regimental system is that the Army must reflect the society from it recruits.

Officially, they're only 20 years old👶 But the Scots, Lancs and Royal Welsh all have histories that are centuries long... 🎙️Reporter @willhollis_tv explains

The Iran war has dealt another blow to the transatlantic alliance. But the former chief of MI6 sees a unique opportunity. He tells @shashj that the UK has been “infantilised” by the US security guarantee and that it must use this moment to reassess its relationship with hard power. France's Porte-Avions Nouvelle Génération (PANG) or New Generation Aircraft Carrier is formidable: • Displaces 75,000 tonnes • Nuclear powered • 2,000 crew • 30 fixed-wing aircraft - Rafale, SCAF, & E2 Hawkeye • 6-8 ASW helicopters. • Expected cost: €10 billion. As impressive as the "France Libre" will be, I worry that it puts too many eggs in one basket. In a world of naval drones and hypersonic missiles, three smaller vessels might be preferable to one big one.

Today marks the 111th anniversary of the great Turkish victory over an Empires might. The allied naval forces were truly routed by the coastal defences along both sides of the Dardanelles. Several British and French ships sunk and others damaged. The land battle would follow.

This should surprise no-one. But will our government address the issue? I have zero faith it will. I hope I'm wrong. Everyone is too terrified to admit how vulnerable Britain has become telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/1…

@nickfshort @msjanebond007 Yes I agree. interesting debate. Personally, think uk needs to concentrate on navy and air power. Threat from the high north is increasing with global warming.BEF expeditionary force should be based on US stryker units , wheel not tracked. Leave heavy stuff to the Central Europe

@DiariesEmpire I’m biased but my x3 great grandfather was an ensign in the 95th rifles at Waterloo. He lost his leg. He was 17. He was stationed at the chateau of Hougemont. He became a vicar after the war. Here he is:
