There's a physicist at Stanford named Safi Bahcall who modeled this exact principle and the math is wild. He calls it "phase transitions in human networks." When you're stationary, your probability of a lucky event is limited to your existing surface area: the people you already know, the places you already go, the ideas you've already been exposed to. Your opportunity window is fixed. When you move, your collision rate with new nodes in a network increases nonlinearly. Double your movement (new conversations, new cities, new projects) and your probability of a serendipitous encounter doesn't double. It roughly quadruples. Because each new node connects you to their entire network, not just to them. Richard Wiseman ran a 10-year study at the University of Hertfordshire tracking self-described "lucky" and "unlucky" people. The single biggest differentiator wasn't IQ, education, or family money. Lucky people scored significantly higher on one trait: openness to experience. They talked to strangers more, varied their routines more, and said yes to invitations at nearly twice the rate. The "unlucky" group followed the same routes, ate at the same restaurants, and talked to the same 5 people. Their networks were closed loops. No new inputs, no new collisions. Luck isn't random. Luck is surface area. And surface area is a function of movement. The lobster emoji is doing more work than most people realize. Lobsters grow by shedding their shell when it gets too tight. The growth requires a period of total vulnerability. No protection, no armor, soft body exposed to the ocean. That's the cost of movement nobody posts about. You have to be uncomfortable first. The new shell only hardens after you've already moved.

@BoredElonMusk As of 2025, California ranks 13th lowest in the nation for public employees per capita, with 491.6 per 10,000 residents, Over the last 50 years the growth of public employment did not keep pace, resulting in a lower per capita ratio than in the mid-20th century.

As a Los Angeles resident I am convinced this is true. Homeless everywhere, crumbling infrastructure, and neighborhoods being allowed to burn to the ground. While the city “employs” an astounding number of people. It’s theft.
Mike Solana@micsolana

this all becomes easier to understand once you realize we're not paying taxes for public infrastructure or services, we're paying taxes to increase the number of bureaucrats who vote for the democratic party

@ABDanielleSmith The Premier's commitment to protect girls is so exciting! I can't wait to see how this gov plans on ensuring girls and women are protected from discrimination, enforcing equal pay and enshrining total autonomy of their own bodies... or is this just performative bullshit?

Women and girls have the right to play competitive sports in a safe and fair environment against other biological females. This view is held by a vast majority of Albertans and Canadians. It is also common sense and common decency. Skate Canada‘s refusal to hold events in Alberta because we choose to protect women and girls in sport is disgraceful. We expect they will apologize and adjust their policies once they realize they are not only compromising the fairness and safety of their athletes, but are also offside with the international community, including the International Olympic Committee, which is moving in the same direction as Alberta.

Don’t EVER let any UCP MLAs use OECD data from 2022 PISA tests to try to pretend that Alberta’s education hasn’t already crumbled under their governance without also asking them what the OECD 2024 TALIS test determined about teachers’ working conditions. #abpoli #abed #cdnpoli

Another season of @TransAlta messing with their own water schedule for the Kananaskis river leaving our @ab_whitewater kids high and dry. Their 5pm scheduled practice was delayed until dusk because TransAlta doesn’t care about river users in their own provincial park.@YourAlberta

@BizCouncilAB How does this reflect the greater role public servants play in making our society equitable? The much higher levels of employees working in private American hospitals and schools esp (PSIs) would skew this data. Should look at specific roles not overall.

Does Canada need a DOGE? While Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) embark on their cost-cutting crusade across the United States' federal departments, one of the world's largest bureaucracies comparative to population sits just north of the border. Canada has 55% more federal employees per resident than the United States. It also has more than Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Canada's bureaucracy has grown substantially in recent years, and there are clearly efficiency gains to be made in the Canadian federal government, but do we need our own DOGE to address this? In their latest #EconMinute, BCA's policy team dives into the pros and cons of setting up Canada's own DOGE. Read the full EconMinute: shorturl.at/rP6A5 #abpoli #cdnpoli #DOGE
