In the 1950s, Homi J. Bhabha proposed a three-stage nuclear program to make India energy-independent.
•Stage 1 used uranium to generate electricity and produce plutonium.
•Stage 2 uses plutonium to generate more electricity while also creating additional fuel, a complex step where many countries struggled.
•Stage 3 will use thorium for long-term energy security.
The challenge is fuel. About 99% of natural uranium is U-238, while only 1% is usable U-235. India used this to produce plutonium and move forward.
Stage 2 is critical because it generates more fuel than it consumes.
India’s biggest advantage is thorium, with nearly 25% of global reserves, which can power the country for centuries.
Despite risks like liquid sodium coolant, India has managed to execute this stage successfully.
This is a big step toward energy independence and strategic strength.
