During that meeting, the Trump officials presumed to lecture Cardinal Pierre on Leo's criticisms of Trump. The Free Press reports that they "picked apart the pontiff’s January speech, reading it as a hostile message directed at Trump’s policies." The Pentagon was "particularly enraged" that Leo would dare to challenge the idiotically named "Donroe Doctrine," Trump's hyper-imperialist, fascist spin on the Monroe Doctrine which claims American dominance over the entire Western Hemisphere. The pope had stated in his address that "a diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force, by either individuals or groups of allies.” It was a clear, albeit oblique, criticism of Trump's foreign policy. During the debacle of a meeting, one Trump official bizarrely referenced the 14th Century Avignon Papacy, during which the French king forced the pope to reside in France. It's considered a dark, humiliating moment for the Vatican that's sometimes referred to as the "Babylonian captivity" of the pope. Mentioning that time period while trying to get the current pope to bend the knee to Trump was akin to spitting in Leo's face. Leo, never one to dissolve into a frothing rage like Trump, has instead chosen a more subtle form of retribution. He refused Trump's invitation to attend the 250th anniversary celebration of America's founding and will instead visit a Mediterranean island that serves as a major transit point for African migrants entering Europe. As for visiting the United States under Trump at a later date, that now seems unlikely. “The Pope may well never visit the United States under this administration," one Vatican official said. We hope that he doesn't. As wonderful as it would be to have a truly moral leader like Pope Leo XIV visit his native United States in the full splendor of his holy office, it would send the wrong message right now. He must not legitimize this president in any way and meeting with Trump here would do exactly that. Rather, Leo should wait until a Democrat claims the White House, so that he'll be visiting an America where sanity reigns and cruelty has been banished.
