I posted this back in 2020 at the beginning of the COVID mess. There are new things going on in the world, but the more things change the more they stay the same. I think much of this is still relevant. keithmathison.org/post/it-s-the-…

@HansFiene Donald Lewis - A Short History of Christian Zionism is pretty good. A helpful work for historical context is David Fromkin's - A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East.

What book would y’all recommend as a clear, relatively unbiased account of the founding of the Zionist movement leading up to the foundation of Israel in 1948?

The latest Lanier/Ross joint venture is here: a critical synopsis of the use of the OT in the NT. I'll post a lengthier overview on @DailySeptuagint in a couple weeks, but here's the basic gist.

If someone asks me what my current cell phone number is, I inevitably have to look it up on my own phone. I can never remember it. At the same time, I still know by heart my childhood home phone number - a number I haven't had or used in over 40 years.

In my first class at Dallas Seminary (1990) the OT Prof told us: "If you preach a sermon from the OT, you should be able to preach that same sermon at any local synagogue w/out anyone raising an eyebrow." That's only possible if you don't preach Jesus. Paul raised eyebrows

Of course, Boersma also concludes, that "Baxter remains firmly entrenched within the reformed tradition.” But Boersma's using the word "reformed" in a much broader and more inclusive sense - not a confessional sense. It would probably also include Jacob Arminius.

Baxter fans told me that Boersma's book was the go-to source for an accurate portrayal. Glad I read it. He not only shows how sympathetic to Roman soteriology RB was, he provides a ton of evidence showing how much RB differs from the confessional soteriology of NAPARC churches.

Thank you for praying, everyone. I am back with my family after “amazing race-ing” my way all over the world to get back to Abu Dhabi. Very thankful to be back with my family, and that they are safe and sound.

For those wondering: I am currently stuck in Ethiopia, trying to get back to my family in Abu Dhabi. It has been a scary ordeal for them and doubly so with dad gone. Please pray for them and that I can get back tomorrow.

Hans Boersma - Baxter "insists that our own personal righteousness is the matter of our subordinate justification. This makes him disagree both with the Westminster Confession and with the Savoy Declaration." (A Hot Pepper Corn, p. 287).

Baxter differs from the WCF on: the nature of the law the nature of the cov of works & grace the nature, purpose & extent of the atonement the nature of justif the formal & instrumental cause of justif the rel. of justif & sanctif etc. But he's really in accord with the WCF.

“Finally, it is also clear that, in Baxter, we see hints of that truly rationalistic tendency within theology which was ultimately to bring about the collapse of Reformed orthodoxy in the following century.” - C. Trueman He must be wrong. He disagrees w/the 14 yr old on Discord!
