In the Two Towers film, Gandalf arrives at dawn with Éomer, even though Éomer is actually inside Helm’s Deep with Théoden, helping defend the fortress throughout the battle. The movie changes this for dramatic effect, turning his return into a cavalry hero moment. In the book, however, Gandalf brings Erkenbrand of the Westfold, leading nearly a thousand men. And unlike the film’s portrayal of a desperate, heavily outnumbered defense, Tolkien writes that the defenders of Helm’s Deep are far more numerous and suffer very few losses, while Saruman’s entire Uruk-hai host is almost completely destroyed once Erkenbrand and Gandalf arrive. ⚔️
