⭐️ A Message from Dr. Dyson ⭐️ It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of Ivette Taboas, a beloved teacher at Urbana Elementary and the FCPS Teacher of the Year for 2024-25. She passed away after a brave and valiant fight with cancer. Ms. Taboas has served in multiple roles across FCPS, including at Urbana Elementary as the multilingual education program teacher since 2020. Prior to that, she was an FCPS Itinerant Multilingual Education teacher for four schools from August 2018-19. She was a teacher at Centerville Elementary from 2013-18 and Hillcrest Elementary from 2009-13. On Friday, Urbana Elementary was able to celebrate Ms. Taboas by wearing Disney apparel. She loved all things Disney. Those photos were shared with Ms. Taboas before she passed away. I know we will always remember her for her infectious smile and enthusiasm for supporting all students. Ms. Taboas showed great care and kindness to students who were learning English as a second language, as you can see in this video from last year’s FCPS Teacher of the Year celebration: m.youtube.com/watch?v=7LNT1N… Our thoughts are with Ms. Taboas, her family, her friends, and her colleagues.

I will never get tired of saying this - Bilingualism is a superpower. Biculturalism is a superpower. And biliteracy is a superpower! That’s why we are investing in multilingualism in schools.

Spent my day visiting teachers& media specialists at different schools for our annual curriculum day! There was so much positive energy, laughter, welcome back hugs, and joy! Here we go 20204-2025!

Kicking off our welcome back to all @FCPSMaryland supervisors and administrators—Dr. Dyson brings us inspiration & a model of the belief—to know us well is to serve us well. She shares…. “I’m hopeful about everyone sitting in a seat in this room. You are supposed to be here.” “You are going to do great things for kids.” “My job is to make sure that the right people are in the right places so that you can empower your teachers to do the right thing for our students.” “Wherever you are situated in this system, you make a difference.” “Never forget. YOU MATTER.”

Lots of interest & planning around implementing the FCPS #WorkFitt program within secondary specialized programs. Programs will not only teach #vocationalskills but also the #fitness needed to develop & maintain the skills throughout life. Spending time this morning reading for my LETRS for Administrators course. This work is critical and will positively impact the lives of children. We are on this journey together!

We cannot normalize being a monolingual country in a multilingual world. That closes doors for our students. That’s why we are investing in multilingualism and in turn, investing in our future.

It’s the last week of school for students! Teachers- thank you, thank you for being there every step of the way, for believing in every child, for advocating, for supporting for trying and trying again—you are real life superheroes!
