Now playing. I used to be a bit sniffy about this - Kamen seemed a poor substitute for John Barry - but it’s grown on me a lot over the years. Like FYEO it has such unique feel it’s impossible to imagine the film with any other score. The music is part of its identity.

If you told me in 1987 that Jose Canseco, Eric Davis, Mark McGwire, Darryl Strawberry, Don Mattingly, and Dwight Gooden wouldn’t be in the Hall of Fame but the Padres’ shitty catcher I was getting in every other pack was going to make it one day I’d have thought you were insane.

I see a lot of bad screenwriting advice on here, often from people who aren't working industry professionals. Here is some basic advice: within three act structure, focus on set-ups and payoffs across story, action and character. Outline fully. Write it out from there. Then edit.

@EDW_Concepts Generally speaking, if you want to make studio movies, 95% of the time structure is indeed a factor and not a distraction. Everyone has their own process obviously so if it is working for you, God bless. To each their own.

@KatzFilms Focusing your attention on structure is a distraction. Your character creates the structure. Focus on what they want and how they're going to get it. Their objective is your objective. That's the structure.

@GreenInvestor7 Not sure what you mean. AI is undeniably useful as a research tool in writing (ie, was this product available in this market in x-year or what is the name of this service in x-country or the like) as a replacement for Google or the like but otherwise not really my thing.

@KatzFilms Good advice, however the problem is deeper. So many new screenwriters dont even know what a set up/pay off is, they scoff at structure, etc. i sold my first script in 1991 and those things are my bible thanks to Syd Field

@KatzFilms Get through crappy first draft as fast as possible. Forward movement only.

Another tip. If you take that full outline, then drop it into Final Draft or your writing program of choice, you can then use it to write out a basic garbage first draft easily - you've already structured it, after all - and you're off and running. Save yourself some time and go.
