Here’s how it works: Pretrained Model: Initially, a language model is trained using vast amounts of text data through unsupervised learning techniques (like predicting the next word in a sentence). However, this model doesn’t always align with human preferences or values. Human Feedback: After the initial pretraining, human annotators evaluate the model's responses to certain prompts. They rank responses based on how helpful, relevant, or aligned they are with human values. Reward Model: The feedback from human annotators is used to train a reward model, which scores the quality of the model's responses based on human preferences. Reinforcement Learning: Using the reward model, the language model is further fine-tuned through a process called Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) or other RL techniques. The model is trained to maximize the reward based on human feedback, improving its responses over time. In summary, RLHF allows models to learn not just from data but also from human evaluators, making the models more aligned with human expectations, producing more helpful and less harmful outputs. This technique is crucial for reducing biases and harmful content in AI models.
