KRA has a new weapon. One that will make banks tremble when borrowers default. In simple terms, When a bank gives you a loan, it come in 2 components: - The principal (the money you borrowed) - The interest (the bank’s income) When borrowers default, banks usually curse them. And declare the loan a bad debt. And for years, all banks proceeded to deduct both the principal and the interest from their taxes. Meaning, KRA quietly absorbed part of their loss. But things have changed. KRA has won a major case against Premier Credit. The ruling backs KRA’s position that: - The principal portion of a loan is not tax deductible. It is a capital loss. Capital can not be deducted from taxes. - Only the interest is tax deductible. Interest is income. This lost income can be deducted from taxes. This means. - When a borrower defaults, the bank loses the principal. This is a serious blow for lenders. Because the principal is usually the largest part of the loan. It means bad lending behavior will now hurt much more. Banks will have to be far more careful about who they lend to. But before you celebrate and say wacha wapigwe. Understand what this means for you as a borrower: - Banks will issue fewer uncollateralized loans. - There will be stricter CRB screening. - Banks will introduce more hidden charges. - Banks will hire more mean looking recovery agents. In short, Access to easy credit is about to become... harder.

Gold in the Motor Sports Category at the World Sports Photography Awards 2026. 🥇 A proud moment for me, my country Kenya 🇰🇪and the Safari Rally. When the Safari Rally returned to the WRC circuit in 2021, I was one of a handful of Kenyan photographers accredited to shoot at the rally. I have been privileged to shoot at every WRC Safari Rally Kenya ever since, making the 2025 edition my fifth in a row. This winning image was captured during Shakedown at Sleeping Warrior. Unlike regular rally stages that are run once before the cars dash on to the next stage, at Shakedown, the drivers run the stage three to four times. These back-to-back runs give us the photographers a chance to change our shooting positions and settings, with the goal of capturing the best shots. I almost always shoot in AV mode which didn't change on the different runs. What changed was my shooting position, from a jump to this one which is where I captured my favourite images from the rally and this winning shot. The dust Grégoire Munster and Louis Louka in their Ford Puma Rally1 are kicking up is called fesh fesh. It is almost watery in nature yet very dry, hence the splashy look it produces in photos. Kenya Revenue Authority has printed a record Kes 251.52 billion in monthly tax collected in Dec 2025. It's a 15.88% y/y growth & 2.09% higher than the June 2025 peak of Kes 246.36 billion. Musings: Three notable things that happened in Q4/2025 come to mind in view of this record collection: · The November introduction of Automated Payment Plans for tax liabilities with up 6 months of instalment payments. Like I said in the past, the instalment period should have been made 12 months to give taxpayers a much deserved breather · In September, we saw the roll out of Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS) with the government saying the target collection from Rental Income Tax is Kes 100.0 billion (see quoted tweet) · At the start of October, we saw the Authority enhance Tax Compliance requirements. Notably, eTIMS compliance was made part of the requirements for securing a Tax Compliance Certificate. Also, the VAT Special Table was made a key factor in securing a Tax Compliance Certificate. Farewell to a true legend of the savannah 🐘💔 Craig, the iconic super tusker of Amboseli National Park, has passed away at 54 from natural causes. With tusks sweeping the ground (each over 100lbs!), a gentle demeanor that made him a photographer's dream, and a life protected by dedicated rangers and Maasai guardians, he was a symbol of successful conservation and Africa's vanishing giants. He fathered many calves, mentored younger bulls, and even became a Tusker beer ambassador. Fewer than a handful of super tuskers remain—his legacy reminds us why we must fight for them. Rest easy, gentle giant. Your footprints will echo forever. 🌍
