In 1988 the movie Die hard was released, but you know who really died hard that same year? The 290 Iranian civilians, 66 children included, that were killed when the US shot down an Iranian airliner. Oh, and the captain of the boat that did it got a medal. Where? Over a spot you are now all too familiar with: The Strait of Hormuz. Why? Many of you already know the story how Iran's democratically elected Mossadegh was driven from power in the 1950s by a CIA orchestrated coup and then replaced by a Shah who, apart from throwing extremely lavish, costly parties with even the eggs flown in from Paris, did the west's bidding. In return he could pretty much do what he want and he got to buy the latest US weapons, sich as the F-14. In 1979 this little deal goes off the rails and the Iranians are sick and tired of this western puppet who often showed extreme disdain towards his own people. The US and its allies were not going to just sit by and watch Iran get a new government it didn't control though. It had a great buddy in the region. Saddam Hussein. They supplied him with everything he needed, including ingredients to produce gas for chemical warfare against the Iranians. All that support didn't quite do the trick and when after 8 years of an atrocious meat grinding slugfest undersupplied, outgunned Iran still looked like it was going to win the US stepped up its game and outright attacked Iran. This is how the airliner got hit. The USS Vincennes claimed it thought it was firing at an F-14 that was descending and thus getting in position to attack. It later turned out that the airliner had been climbing when the US shot it down and incinerated the passengers. The US did pay some compensation to the families of the victims, but denied any wrongdoing. The captain of the USS Vincennes, William C. Rogers III (family's dude seems to have had lingering aristocratic aspirations with a name like that...) got a medal. Why don't those pesky Iranians sit down and agree to some deal with the US? Well, even after all the shit the US has been pulling for decades they tried hard, until their leaders died hard. So right now, if they want to turn the disgusting treatment they have been consistently receiving from the west into something at least half good for them, they have to stick it out and embarrass the US, Israel and the Gulf states a good while longer, by simply not losing and keeping that aforementioned Strait of Hormuz about as safe for ships as beauty pageant contestants are safe in their dressing rooms when Trump walks in.

@hemantsv @tishasaroyan No. I still admire your knowledge. Just don't respect you any more. Your personal beliefs are very one dimensional with no nuance. You are even open to America bombing India to get rid of Modi. To me that's an attack on Indian sovereignity. A no go area.

Connect the dots. Stealing uranium was the original mission. The generals told trump, that’s impossible. The generals got fired. The mission failed catastrophically with loss of hardware and possibly personnel. Trump claimed, it was a pilot rescue success. Fox had an orgasm.

@michaeldweiss More details still need to fill in. The bent propellers means the aircraft was hit in the air & the propellers were still rotating when hitting the ground.

"The op basically cost $300 million because they had to abandon the two AFSOC C-130s and the four MH-6 Little Birds. Then the U.S. Air Force had to use multiple bombs to blow up all the aircraft they abandoned at that airstrip. And the Iranians shot down 2 MQ-9s Reaper drones. "Luckily the U.S. suffered no casualties and we had to use multiple bombs and missiles to blow up IRGC vehicles that tried to drive up the mountain and also those that tried to drive to the airstrip." 2/2

Details about the rescue op for the U.S. Weapon Systems Officer, via a U.S. military official: "The mountain top area on the left is where the WSO was hiding (he ejected 5ish miles northwest of there). The right area is the makeshift landing strip where they landed 2 C-130s and had 4 MH-6 Little Birds. "One Little Bird flew to that mountain top area and rescued the WSO and brought him back to the landing strip. And of course the two C-130s' nose gears got stuck in the dirt. So after a few hours they had to bring in three AFSOC Dash-8s to fly out the rescued WSO and the 100 or so personnel involved in the op." 1/2

The New York Times report on the rescued US airman falsely implies local Iranians aided him. I asked Julian Barnes, co-author of the report, what the evidence was for this. His Response: 'Oh, Iranians didn't assist the airman. This was speculation "from our Iran experts." (The article never clarifies that this was pure speculation, without any evidence; it has not been edited to indicate that in Barnes's own assessment the airman was not assisted by local Iranians; and it is being used to manufacture consent for this war, based on the conspiracy theory that 'Iranians want this.' Do better, @nytimes. Very disappointing.)
