Do not let Chat Control happen. 1. It weakens privacy Many messaging apps use end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and recipient can read messages. Critics argue that requiring scanning of messages would effectively create a surveillance mechanism inside private communications. Even if the scanning happens on a user's device before encryption ("client-side scanning"), opponents say it still means private messages are being checked by software before they are sent. 2. It could create a dangerous precedent Privacy advocates worry that once technology exists to scan communications for one type of content, governments may later expand it to search for other things. The concern is not only what current lawmakers intend, but what future governments might do with the same infrastructure. 3. False positives can harm innocent people Automated detection systems are not perfect. Family photos could be misidentified. Innocent conversations could be flagged as suspicious. Users may be investigated despite doing nothing wrong. Even a very accurate system can generate many false reports when applied to billions of messages. 4. It may conflict with fundamental rights Organizations such as European Data Protection Board and numerous civil liberties groups have raised concerns about compatibility with: Privacy rights Confidential communications Freedom of expression Data protection principles Critics argue that scanning everyone's messages resembles mass surveillance rather than targeted investigation. 5. Security experts have concerns Many cybersecurity researchers argue that introducing mandatory scanning mechanisms increases system complexity and may create new security risks. If scanning systems are compromised, abused, or expanded, users could lose confidence in secure communications. 6. Effectiveness is debated Opponents argue that determined criminals may simply: Move to self-hosted platforms. Use modified software. Use encryption tools outside EU jurisdiction. Use hidden networks and other methods. Meanwhile, ordinary citizens would bear the privacy costs. Remember, Privacy is a universal right. Learn more: mullvad.net/en/chatcontrol

@nym Haven't they tried to ban this before with the Online Safety Act before but failed? Hardly doubt they'll be able to.

🇬🇧 UK - the one to watch The Online Safety Act is live. Ofcom has publicly called VPNs a "technical problem." A House of Lords vote supported exploring VPN restrictions for minors. Ministers have confirmed VPNs are in active consultation. No ban yet. But "we will make further statements" is not a denial.
