@phylogenomics @environmicrobio I do know what they (me) were thinking and a plant is a different version of multicellular than a biofilm, c’mon Roland, you weren’t there.

@environmicrobio Well I don’t know what they were thinking or how they define things but I personally do not consider biofilms to be “multicellular” in the sense of a “multicellular organism”

@NagissaM Literally nothing in the years leading up to a tenure dossier made me cry, but my COVID disruptions paragraph did.

@erin_cameron We have been using them for a few years now and they are great! Email me and I can send you the protocol we developed for sampling in the field with RNALater and then the protocol for getting the biomass back out once at the lab

@LAHug_ Just wondering - did you ever test these? They seem good for cases where the sampling protocol needs to be very simple, but I can't find much in the literature on them

Groundwater/micro twitter - have you used these cartridge filters for large-scale filtration, and if yes, can you easily crack them open to get the filters out for nucleic acid extraction? Pros/cons, alternatives? waterra.com/product/waterr…

@phylogenomics I have a set of 3, 20 min videos and an accompanying workshop module - one could run it on their own if they were up for installing the programs.

I was letting students in my classes use Chat GPT or other AI software to help with grammar, but I now realize that was a mistake. AI-aided writing turns out to be awful, generating nonsensical sentences or plagiarism. One can identify AI-aided writing because it writes with adverbs and adjectives rather than with verbs, subjects and objects. Every AI-aided essay reads like a cheap romance novel. This is how the world will end!

@jensomics how do they have 86% rubella when it's an MMR vax? Does Rubella only need the first shot, and MM need the next one for a complete course?

🧫New pre-print from CUBE🧫led by Aaron Hinz (lab wizard!). We show that floor swabs can be used to identify COVID-19 cases on a university campus. Floor swabs had stronger correlation than wastewater, req less setup costs, and are less gross 💩 1/3 medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

Four different people on Twitter in the past week: I saved a kid from drowning at a BBQ, here’s what to look for. Me today: oh that kid is drowning. Got him out, all fine.

@elvisha9 I look at the week I am currently in on my calendar and ask myself if I would be willing to make time for this new thing in this level of busy week. And if I would, I say yes. And if it would be untenable or frustrating to give that time, I say no. It has helped a lot.

How do other ECRs decide what (academic commitments) to say yes/no to? Asking for myself because I'm starting to get extremely overwhelmed by all the things I've said yes to...

Alex Ensminger @legionella.bsky.social
The University of Toronto, Department of Biochemistry is searching for an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream. FYI, these positions are analogous to research "tenure-stream" in that following a successful 6 yr review promotion is to Associate Prof (continuing status).

It's a very nice idea to remember this groundbreaking discovery @journal_mlife! Woese had to fight hard for his ideas that are found in every textbook by now. And the story continues with the Asgard Archaea in new dimensions :).
mLife Journal@journal_mlife

The term ‘Archaea’ is coined by microbiologist Carl Woese in 1974. In 1990, Woese proposed Archaea as a distinct life domain, separate from bacteria and eukaryotes. To commemorate the groundbreaking contributions of Carl Woese, three #mLife papers were dedicated.
