Cool find during some pond maintenance by our @SummerwoodComm1 volunteers - caddis fly cases! The larvae use silk to bind together bits of stick, stones and other debris to make a protective case. This one even has some pearl mussels hanging out on it! #insects #wildlifegardening

@Blue14Dragon Not likely to be interested in a house / shed unless they are somehow... really sweet? 😂

@Blue14Dragon Heyo! I don't think they're living *in* the tree, just using existing channels in the bark to go up and down. There are likely LOTS of aphids (which secrete honeydew, a sugary liquid) up the tree - or sweet birch sap leaking from a wound - and the ants are foraging for it.

@Blue14Dragon If it's a bonanza of sweet stuff, the ants will have recruited loads of nestmates to go harvest too.

@B_Strawbridge Paging @susie_dent - Why is it called Larceny?

Buff-tailed #bumblebee collecting nectar from salvia. Look closely & you’ll see she’s not using the entrance to the flower (tongue too short) but is ‘robbing’ the nectar through a hole at its base. This is known as ‘larceny’! She’s a worker, so there must be a winter nest nearby
