Hedda is a blast! Nia DaCosta crafts a raucous bacchanal with Tessa Thompson as a vicious agent of bisexual chaos. Loved the witty, dastardly script and DaCosta’s fanciful and energetic direction. Thompson and Nina Hoss are ruthlessly captivating. #TIFF50

HEDDA: a bolder, more modern reimagining of Ibsen's play expertly directed by Nia DaCosta with a terrific Tessa Thompson at the helm, and an equally brilliant cast backing her up. Beautifully filmed and scored, and (mostly) lands its thematic and narrative beats well. #TIFF50

HEDDA receives a sexier, darker, and queer adaptation from Nia DaCosta where all hearts break and hell lets loose over the course of a single evening villa party. Sean Bobbitt’s camerawork and lighting is gorgeous throughout, Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score swings between brooding and lively, while Tessa Thompson and Nina Hoss are absolutely phenomenal, holding us in their grasp with their emotionally fierce and riveting performances. Though it takes some time to find its rhythm and the writing initially keeps the audience at arm’s length, the second half comes alive as the party thins out and the twists pile on.

#HEDDA well highlights the value of continuing to adapt iconic work. The movie is very clearly rooted in Henrik Ibsen’s play but it is dripping in Nia DaCosta’s authorial expressivity. It’s just so incredibly clear that she had a set of very specific ideas and qualities that she wanted to bring to the story, and knew exactly how to make it all happen with her A+ cast and crew.

Nia DaCosta delivers her best film yet with HEDDA. Beautiful cinematography, chilling score, and amazing production design. Tessa Thompson is devilishly chaotic in the lead role. Her on-screen chemistry with Nina Hoss is fiery and palpable. Really enjoyed the theme of control.
