@acoyne, let’s break down some of the ROI on that “boondoggle”, shall we?
🔐 CONSTRUCTION PHASE
51,000 direct jobs over a decade-plus build. Sustained demand for Canadian steel, concrete, electrical systems, and skilled trades across Ontario and Quebec.
📈 MACROECONOMIC RETURN
Every $1 invested in public transit generates $2.40 in economic activity plus $1 in additional GDP. The completed Alto corridor projects $35B in annual productivity gains, a 1.1% national GDP addition, and $55B in lifetime socioeconomic benefits.
🔄 CIRCULAR ECONOMY
60,000+ housing units around new stations, $570M per year in congestion savings, $7.2B in environmental benefits, and the equivalent of 100,000 cars removed from roads every single year.
🌿 ENVIRONMENT
A fully electrified network powered by Quebec hydroelectric. Modal shift away from cars and short-haul flights cuts transportation emissions structurally, not incrementally.
👷 LABOUR MARKET
Employers and workers across the corridor become effectively closer. A bigger hiring pool for businesses, more job options for workers, without anyone having to relocate.
⚡ ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
Operational energy costs insulated from fossil fuel price swings. Quebec hydro powers the trains. No exposure to oil market volatility for the life of the network.
🍁 BUY CANADIAN
Bill C-15 makes domestic sourcing a legal requirement for Alto. Over 4,000 km of steel rail and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of structural materials going to Canadian mills first. In the middle of a trade war, that is not a small detail.
France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the UK, the US. Every other G7 member has high-speed rail. Canada is the only one that doesn't. Pierre Poilievre loves reminding Canadians how poorly we rank among G7 peers. On this specific metric, he would actually be right. He just happens to oppose the one project that would fix it.
Make of that what you will.

My latest: Poilievre’s right — high-speed rail is shaping up to be a “$90-billion dollar boondoggle.” Only it’s likely to be much more than that theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…

Call it serendipity. Took a break from the #ForeverCanadian campaign and went on a walk. These two fellows greeted me, as if to say “Go Canada!”. 🇨🇦

Zelensky just reminded JD Vance that calling Ukrainian territory a "scrap of land" isn't a negotiating position. It's an insult.
With full diplomatic courtesy and zero diplomatic softness, Zelensky explained what Vance apparently doesn't know: the territory in question has 200,000 residents, strong fortifications, and sits exactly where Russia wants to build a bridgehead for its next offensive. Giving it up doesn't end the war. It stages the next one.
Then the closing line: "Every square meter of our land is Ukrainian land and, with all due respect to any of our partners, it is definitely not theirs."
There's no misreading that sentence.

Separatist leader, Mitch Sylvestre, wants the Court to issue an injunction and stop his signature collection. This way, he’ll never need to prove that he got 177,000 signatures (I doubt he did) and Danielle Smith will give him a referendum anyhow.

The ceasefire was a complete fiction. While the White House announced one, missiles were still flying across Israel, Iran, and Lebanon. Reality doesn’t match the headline.
The White House was forced to backtrack today because the proposed “10-point deal” from Iran was a disaster that would let them enrich uranium, fund proxies like Hezbollah, maintain leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, and get sanctions relief. Even top allies like Mark Levin and Larry Kudlow are calling it a disaster.
Let’s be honest about how we got here: there was never an imminent threat to the U.S. Now we’re stuck in it, negotiating from a weakened position.
