Yes, it commemorates the freedom from Egypt, but there's also a much closer, and even more heroic (no divine promise this time) anniversary. Exactly 83 years ago, on the second night of Passover, the Holiday of Freedom, the Jewish resistance of the Warsaw Ghetto began its legendary Uprising. As the Germans prepared to finish the liquidation of the Ghetto for Hitler’s birthday a few days hence by mass deportations to Trebkinka, a handful of Jewish youths, emaciated, exhausted, beaten up physically and mentally, chose to take a last stand. The ghetto at that stage held around 50,000–60,000 remaining Jews after the massive 1942 deportations (from an original peak population of 400,000–450,000 crammed into 1.3 square miles from all parts ofPoland). No food, no wood, typhus and Aktions. But they fought. My father, a Shoah orphan himself, always began the second Seder with a homage to them. 700 young Jewish fighters — members of the ŻOB and ŻZW, armed with just a handful of old smuggled rifles and homemade grenades and Molotov cocktails. They knew they had no chance. But they fought. SS commander Jürgen Stroop admitted in his report that the Jews "fought like soldiers on a battlefield". It took the Germans nearly a month (April 19 to May 16, 1943) of brutal house-to-house fighting, systematic arson. It took them Wehrmacht and SS and tanks and planes to crush the resistance.
