Twelve janitors at Alderney Gate are losing their jobs in four days because the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) City Council has decided to go with a cheaper non-union contractor. This is union-busting, and it is shameful that Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore (@AndyFillmoreHFX) and HRM Council are doing this. Janitors urgently need your solidarity and support TOMORROW (Tuesday February 26th) at 6:00pm at Halifax City hall (1841 Argyle) for an EMERGENCY RALLY outside the weekly HRM City Council meeting. Food will be provided. These mostly Black janitors and their union, SEIU Local 2 (@seiulocal2can), are calling on HRM Mayor Andy Fillmore, HRM Council & the City CAO to: (1) Require and mandate the incoming non-union janitorial contractor — SeaScape Building Maintenance — to hire these workers at a liveable wage & adopt their union contract. (2) Delay the incoming janitorial contractor’s contract by at least one month, which will allow HRM Council more time to review the situation & properly accommodate workers. Public pressure on Council is deeply needed prior to tomorrow's regional council meeting as well.
