I received the copies of the 'First Steps in Our History' today, taught in the 50s and 60s in Pakistani schools from Class 4 to 6, before Pak-Studies took over. The history starts with ancient Dravidians and moves in a chronological order covering Aryan arrival, the Vedic, Buddhist, and Islamic periods, then finally ending with Sir Syed's reformed religion and the establishment of democratic Pakistan. The children are taught about Lord Ram, Buddha, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Mughals, dynasties created by all major Pakistani ethnicities, Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, and even kingdoms created by the people from the Gangetic Plains, like Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka. All are shown in a positive light. Pakistan is defined as a Muslim State, and not a religious one, where Muslims are in the majority, but the country belongs to all. "Ancient India" is addressed as "Indo-Pak Subcontinent", while modern states are addressed as "Pakistan" and "Bharat". Rivalry with the present-day Indian state (Bharat) is defined in political and economic terms that started in 1947, instead of something strictly religious from centuries ago. The books appreciate every culture for contributing to making the Pakistan region what it is today. The course basically implies that deep down we're still the same people who were living here thousands of years ago. It further concludes that the successor kingdoms and civilisations to ancient South Asians, both from the West and East of the Indus River, enriched and shaped the diverse culture of modern Pakistan, which should be cherished and appreciated in its entirety.
