My wife told me it was no problem, that she’d stay at the hospital and our son was happy and healthy. So I went back, and went to the stadium the following night… but I didn’t play a single minute. No one gave me any explanations, no one spoke to me, and they didn’t even thank me for returning. From that day on, I made the decision not to play for England again as long as he was the coach. The problem was never representing my country. Playing for England was one of the greatest honours of my career. The problem was him. He never understood that there are personal moments that take precedence over football. He never congratulated me or showed the slightest bit of interest.
