Candles are Deadly🕯️ As part of the 12 Days of Christmas Fire Safety campaign, Meath Fire and Rescue's Barry Balfe talks us through a daily fire safety tip for around the home. Barry and his colleagues across the county aim to raise awareness among County Meath residents about common fire hazards and safety risks during the festive season. On the second day of Christmas, Meath Fire and Rescue advise you at home to NEVER place candles near your Christmas tree, decorations, cards and furnishings. 12 Days of Christmas Fire Safety Campaign Meath County Council Fire & Rescue Service (MCCFRS) launched its annual 12 Days of Christmas Fire Safety Campaign today at Buvinda House. This initiative aims to raise awareness among County Meath residents about common fire hazards and safety risks during the festive season. As part of the campaign, we have a short video each evening with a safety tip for around the home this Christmas. Brochures will also be available in all Meath libraries over the festive period. In addition, each fire station will host at least one promotional event (approximately two hours) within their local area during the Christmas period. Keep an eye out for our stands at your local shopping centre, library, or other community hub.

Public Safety Messaging There is a potential for tidal flooding in coastal areas, especially in Eastern counties. In addition to this, heavy persistent showers are expected, which in turn may lead to surface flooding in urban locations. High seas; the public are advised to stay away from coastal areas during this period. The Irish Coast Guard are appealing to people to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”. Stay away from swollen rivers, streams and flooded riverbanks – banks can collapse without warning. Avoid open riverbanks and canal paths in flood conditions – water levels and currents may be far stronger than usual. Slow down, increase stopping distances and watch for surface water and debris on roads If the road ahead is flooded, do not enter – turn around and find another route. Follow advice from emergency services and your local authority: • Avoid contact with floodwater where possible; it may be contaminated with sewage, chemicals or sharp debris • Farmers in affected areas are advised to move vehicles, machinery and livestock to higher ground before flooding arrives, where possible. • People are advised to prepare for this period of severe weather, including ensuring their mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication. Monitor Met Éireann forecasts and/or visit met.ie for the most up to date information. Information is available across social media platforms and other news media sources. ESB Networks is highlighting the dangers posed by fallen live wires and is advising the public and the emergency services to stay away from these fallen cables and to report such cases to it immediately.
