A long-awaited step towards UN General Assembly recognition of the human right to a healthy environment: yesterday, five states circulated a draft resolution to all UN missions. This is a big deal. In this thread, I explain the background, the resolution, and next steps. 1/16

I’ll never stop being shocked that the UN process has spent five decades avoiding talking about fossil fuels while attempting to talk about the ecological damage they cause, including climate change. It’s wild that it took this long, and it’s big that it’s finally happening.
alex rafalowicz@alexraf

We’re waiting for the actual text to be released but it seems that #stockholm50 might be the first UN conference to clearly recommend the “phase out of all fossil fuels” and to recognise the urgent need for “financial and technical support to realise a just transition.”

There is always a first time: For the first time, for a brief time, California ran on 100% renewables It will run on 100% renewables all the time well before 2045 We can do this. Everywhere. Despite fossil fuel subsidies and vested interests environmentcalifornia.org/news/cae/state… #climate

Fossil fuel interests are now cynically using the war in Ukraine to try to lock in a high carbon future. A shift to renewables is crucial to mending our broken global energy mix & offering hope to millions suffering climate impacts today.

Look at all the gas produced and used in the US! To me, the conversation here in the US should be much more about how we can *use* less ourselves (freeing it up for Europe) than on how to *produce* more. Using less has so many more co-benefits than producing more.
Peter Erickson@SEI_Erickson

The US uses *so* *much* gas. Look at this chart, the US uses 860 bcm each year! Would not be difficult to reduce gas demand to free up 50 bcm of gas annually or more for expanded exports to EU. (4/6)
