ATTENTION QUALITATIVE RESEARCHERS: Stop Saying “We Reached Saturation” — Start Proving It Our article in The Leadership Quarterly explains how to make qualitative research more trustworthy. It moves saturation from a vague ritual to a defensible methodological decision, offering a practical roadmap for producing qualitative research that can be genuinely trusted. 1️⃣Saturation must be defined, not assumed: Our review showed that over 40% of published studies claim saturation without defining what it means, undermining transparency and credibility. We argue that researchers must explicitly define saturation in ways that align with their philosophical stance, research goals, and methods. We describe four distinct forms of saturation (theoretical, inductive thematic, a priori thematic, and data saturation), each suited to different epistemological and methodological choices. 2️⃣ Assessing saturation requires an explicit, iterative plan: Rather than relying on generic sample-size rules, we recommend iterative data collection and analysis with predefined decision points. Studies that document how themes, codes, or theory stabilize are far more trustworthy than those that rely on numerical thresholds alone. 3️⃣Reporting saturation is as important as achieving it: We explain how to report saturation decisions transparently using tables, grids, coding documentation, and clear statements linking saturation outcomes to theoretical contributions. 4️⃣Decision-making framework and best practices: We offer a decision-making framework for defining, assessing, and reporting saturation, including triangulation, negative case analysis, team consensus, and member checks to validate saturation decisions.
