Marietta Allison, 61, fought back against a would-be purse snatcher after spending a long day with her friend at a hospital. The assailant, later identified as 18-year-old Darius Hall, pulled out a gun and shot her once in the neck, prosecutor Katie Rogers said in court. She died at a hospital as police searched for the missing vehicle, which was later found with Hall behind the wheel. Pausing to honor and remember a friend and leader who taught me so much. It’s been a year since we lost @SylvesterTurner.
He loved #Houston. He always spoke of our downtown skyline. For him it was filled with the possibility and dreams he pursued. There is hardly a day that goes by I don’t think of him, or wish I could pick up the phone.
From The 44 to the #Txlege to City Hall to Congress. He gave his life to the people of #Houston, for a better tomorrow.

Today marks one year since we lost Congressman Sylvester Turner.
Mayor. Congressman. Statesman. Someone who always picked up the phone. Who showed up for every community, every single time. Who had a kind word and thoughtful advice ready no matter.
He served this city, the 18th District, and this state selflessly and honorably for decades.
Grateful to have called him a mentor and a friend. And will do everything I can to honor and continue his legacy.

I am heartbroken by the senseless mass shooting in downtown Austin. No one should fear facing violence on a night out. I am grateful for the first responders who acted swiftly, and my heart is with the victims, the survivors, and all those whose lives have been shattered by this tragedy.
Congress must work to build safer communities and pass meaningful gun safety legislation. I am committed to doing so.
